Show 5 & WEST VALLEY VIEW . Bearing Fruit From Year To Year Thursday, Sept. 1,1983 Banana Tree Dating Back To '67 Flourishes At Jackling School areas were originally designed by OlgaMilius GRANGER. Not many students in Granite School District have the opportunity to see bananas growing, let alone watch their development throughout the year. But students at Jackling elementary can do just that. A banana tree has been a unique feature at the school since it opened in 1967. The plant came from the University of Utah, it was a little, pathetic-lookin- g thing, with just two leaves, one of them half dead and we never thought it would grow, recalls Louis Jensen, now principal of Lake Ridge elementary. He was Jackl-ing- s first principal. One of those leaves died and fell off the plant, but in spite of everything, the plant not only survived, but thrived, he said. The banana plant was placed in one of two small open areas situated at either side of the schools media center, Mr. Jensen explained. Both to be left open to the sky, but the one in which the tropical plant was placed was later enclosed, with a glass skylight roof. The banana plant, once it started, grew fast, Mr. Jensen said, So fast you could actually see it growing, week by week. It still does, agreed Jackling custodian Maurice Trafalet, who waters the area regularly. The skylight is about 20 feet high, but that tree grows so fast, it hits the roof and breaks, or has to be trimmed, over and over again, he added. Mr. Jensen said when the plant was given to the school, they were told it was a cooking variety of banana, not the kind usually seen in the stores around this area. It doesnt taste at all like the bananas you buy in the store, affirmed Mr. Trafalet. He cut several bunches of fruit this year and, although he ate several, he said most people dont seem to care for the taste. The fruit takes a long time to turn yellow after cutting, he remarked. The tree is bushy, with great big leaves, about 2x4 feet across, he Moms, Daughters To said. Originally, we had a large variety of plants in the two enclosures observed Mr. Jensen. It was interesting for the students to see the difference between those grown m the open and those in Lie greenhouse. Dr. Ivan Turpin, a 1963 Cyprus high graduate who went on to become a plastic surgeon, has performed innovative surgery at the Orange County Childrens Hospital, believed to be the first of its kind in the United States. David The patient was Novak, who was born with Downs syndrome, a congenital defect that gives rise to physical and mental Jackling elementary custodian Maurice Trafelet pulls down a cluster of green bananas growing on group of banana trees in school's greenhouse. JACKLING BANANAS . . . abnormalities. These include mental retardation, a face distinctly flat and short nosed, small slanted eyes, stubby fingers and a tongue too big for a mouth that is too small. Stretched, the boys tongue extended past the edge of his chin. He rarely closed his mouth because his tongue didnt fit, which caused him to spit and drool. Few people if any could understand his speech, which sounded like he had a wad of cotton stuffed in his mouth. The operation reduced the boys tongue by nearly half. Specialists around the country believe he is the first child with Downs syndrome to undergo the operation in the United States. In West Germany and England, where the tongue operation debuted in 1977, surgeons claim the full host of medical and cosmetic benefits. They say the operation will protect children from the respiratory infections and dental abnormalities that go along with Downs syndrome, problems they claim arise from spitting, mouth breathing and trying to accommodate an oversized tongue. Dr. Turpin noted that for years, U. S. surgeons have performed the operation on cancer patients, but the medical community has so far paid little attention to applying the procedure to retarded children. He went on to say that until recently, Down's syndrome sufferers died young, usually of infections and heart disease. And since they had little chance of living to adulthood, doctors paid little heed to procedures that might help them lead productive lives. With new drugs and surgery, Dr. Turpin said that doctors can treat the ailments that used to kill these children. Now they stand as good a chance as anyone of living to old age. In the past decade, services have blossomed that bring these children into the mainstream and teach them to live within it. Dr. Turpin said the surgery is another step toward helping them to appear more normal. Although the Europeans have offered a long list of testimonials regarding the benefit of the surgery, they have not provided any hard data on the benefits. For this reason the effects of the Novak boys operation are being carefully documented. Dr. Turpin videotaped his speech before the surgery and in about a year he will compare it to a followup tape.
