Show Lancers Eye Alta; Cougars Test Bucs 3 - WEST VALLEY VIEW Thursday, Sept. 1, 1983 t Granger Scores At Will To Rout Cougar Eleven Friday KEARNS. Granger high gridders unleashed an overpowering attack . here Friday afternoon to spoil the debut of Coach Tom Larson at I Kearns high, downing the Cougars ; 39-' If there was a way to score, the Lancers found it. And the defense ; was equally impressive. ; The day wasnt a total wash for the Cougars, however. Kearns showed I some ability to make adjustments, : recovered three fumbles, punted -- well and unveiled a gutsy team ' leader in quarterback Greg Carver. : - Both teams will be back in action tomorrow (Friday). Granger will - travel to Alta for a 3 p.m. test of a -- good Hawk squad, while Kearns will meet Cyprus in Magna under the lights at 7:30. Larson will be looking for improvement in line play and pass protection, as well as greater balance in his offensive attack and special teams. Coach Mike Fraser is hoping his team will tighten up in the secondary and continue to show the solidity that seemed evident Friday Granger took command early Friday, but it was the last few minutes before the end of the first half and the initial two minutes of the second that turned the game into a rout. Granger held Kearns out of the end zone after a Cougar fumble recovery. Wasted time outs came back to haunt Kearns. A key stop by Troy Yiatras sent Kearns into the dressing room trailing 19-When Jim Ballard returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a 25-- 0 Granger lead, things began looking really bleak for the Cougars and 47 seconds later, Rick Searle intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a score. The game was all but over at that point. However, the Cougars showed adthey had made some half-tim- e justments in giving Carver some protection and it paid off with a third-quarttouchdown, again after a fumble recovery. Carver hooked up with Kirt Francis for the score and found Wade Slaughter for the two-poiconversion. Granger answered right back with a Gene Tafoya touchdown before the second stringers took over for good. Grangers first half points came quickly. On the first Lancer possession Randy Weiss gained 30 yards in a drive and scored from the four. A conversion failed, but more than two minutes remainclock when ed on the Todd Neilson recovered a Cougar fumble at the nine to set up a Kelly Foote score. Again the PAT failed. Mitch Mills hooked up with Tafoya on an pass play for the third Lancer score. Granger rushed for 201 yards, with Tafoya gaining 68 on 14 carries and Weiss 63 on 11. Mills was 5x9 through the air for 69. Yiatras was named Lancer player of the game for his defensive play. The Cougar coaches cited Carver for his play which included 17x39 completions for 162 yards, despite having to run for his life. Kearns had negative yards on the ground. Recovering fumbles for Kearns were Chad Zitting, Chad Pickett and Hap Husband. Marty Jaramillo averaged 45 yards pune ting. The game had typical penalties on both sides of the field. first-gam- two-poi- first-perio- d Grid Openers Weber At Home, Utes On Road SALT LAKE. Two of Utahs major college grid squads will usher in the new season Saturday. Utah will journey to Albuquerque to pry the lid off the new campaign in a WAC tussle with New Mexico. Weber State will be at home for a first-evmeeting with Southwest (Minn.) State. Both kickoffs will be at 7 oclock. Brigham Young, the odds-o- n favorite to capture an eighth straight WAC crown, will delay its start until Sept. 10 when Baylor will be the foe in Waco, Texas. Utah State will also make its debut on Sept. 10, with the Aggies challenging Arizona State at Tempe. Saturdays game will be the 25th meeting of the Utes and Lobos on the gridiron. Though they didnt play last year, theyd met one another 21 consecutive seasons prior to that. Their last collision resulted in a tie at Albuquerque in 1981. Over the years Utah has accumulated 15 wins, New Mexico seven and two games ended in a tie. Weber, in opening its third season under Coach Mike Price, is eyeing improvement. The Cats slumped in 82 after turning in a campaign in Prices inaugural season. Their foe, a Division II school, is relatively new (founded 1963) and has an enrollment of 2, 100. er GREEN SHEET PHOTOS - Michele Bartmess CRUNCH. . . Pirate Coach Sees Promise Despite Loss ' '. k ; was where the Cougars showed a weakness Friday. While the final score Friday was a minus for the Pirates, the overall effort wasnt all that displeasing to the coaches. Bear River showed an outstanding passing attack, one of the best Hunter feels he has faced over the years. The Bears scored in the first and third periods and late in the game after an interception. Three times the Bucs denied the Bears from inside the 10, but Bear ball and River played error-fre- e Cyprus often had to operate from deep in its own territory. The Buc score came in the third period when Todd Christiansen hooked up with d Alfredo Kamidoi on a pass play. In the first half Bear River held Cyprus out of the end zone on a key scoring opportunity. Defensively Cam Smith tallied 14 assisted tackles and a pair of solos to capture player of the game honors. The offensive honor went to the junior speedster Kamidoi who rushed for 100 yards and was solid on kick returns, along with Joe Gallegos. Others Hunter cited on defense were Jon Sneddon, Brian Denzley, Shannon Bearden and Greg Hansen. Its never fun to lose, but taking this game as a learning experience, we feel pretty good about our team, Hunter concluded. MAGNA. Theres light at the end of the tunnel, says Cyprus high Coach Bill Hunter after studying im- plications of a 21-- 7 loss to Bear River Friday night. The Pirates will host Kearns tomorrow (Friday), going for their ; fifth straight victory over the Cougars in a 7:30 p.m. contest. I I dont think we can overpower ; Kearns the way Granger did, the Pirate mentor commented.
