Show JJWEST IDowta VALLEY VIEW t THE Thursday, Aug. 25, 1983 GREEN SHEETWEST Chiilmeu - Slowed Gtewfk 0(i I was part of the cleaning crew that worked to get the building ready for the Valley West Hospital to open its doors back in July 1963, tells Wanda Christensen of Magna. The place could only take care of 20 patients at that time and it would have been hard to imagine that, in just 20 years, there would be an entirely new building, five stories high, with beds to care for 137 people. Wanda most certainly didnt plan on working at a hospital. That would have been the last thing she would have dreamed of, and yet that is where she has worked for the longest time of her life and that is where she retired from, just last month. I grew up on a farm outside of Idaho Falls and lived there until I wed. We all went to a school house in Osgood, about two miles from where we lived, and attended there until we graduated from the eighth grade. A lot of people laugh when they hear about my school days, but we learned an awful lot in those two rooms There were four grades and one teacher to each room, yet upon our finishing those grades there, in some ways, it seems we knew more than many of the kids who graduate from high school now. Our education was concentrated and besides that, we wanted to learn. The teachers didn't have to scold us to get our lessons, we wanted to do them. Wanda was the daughter of Arthur and Minnie Bvbee Hancey and was the baby in a family of five girls and one boy She met her future husband, Wilbur Marion Christensen when she and her girl friend double-dateand Wilbur was her girl friend's date. That didn't last long, however, for the next time he called, was for her, and from then on they dated until their marriage. We lived in Idaho for five years, Wanda recalls, but it was hard to find work during those Depression years and so, when his brother wrote t, and said there was work at we moved. Wilbur did find work and we moved into a company house in Garfield and lived there until Kennecott went out of the housing business and moved to Magna, to the home I still live in. The house was moved from Magna Row to where it is now and, after renting for several years, we bought it for ourselves in 1976. Wanda's husband died in 1958 and it was then she had to find some work to support herself. I did housework for others and it was good work, but I had to find something more steady and when Date) We&t Henpitat two-roo- Leon And LaRue Peterson Mark Golden Anniversary Leon and LaRue Peterson will be honored August 27th on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. I was hired, too, even before the facility opened and was part of the housekeeping crew that cleaned up after the builders and had it ready to open for patients. It was only after four months as a cleaner, however, that I was told they needed aides in surgery and would I be interested. I had no idea if I could work where the doctors were operating but I tried it and after my first surgery, I found it so interesting that it didn't bother me one I Ken-necot- -- bit. n Gardening and home making are other Cities which Wanda enjoys. I've seen a lot of operations, Wanda tells, but the most interesting to me was a lung operation. It is so marvelous what can be done and it was so great that I was a small part of getting it done. But those days in surgery are over now and Wanda is finding delight in what she loved as a child. Farming.
