Show At Redwood Myli, assistant to Bishop Stan Olsen of the Southwest Pacific Synod, Lutheran Church of America, will Students Putting In Extra Time combination of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning is paying off for students involved in math classes at Redwood elementary. Students who were having problems with learning times tables were given eight weeks of special tutoring before school closed for the summer, explained principal Nedra Robison. The students have now review of been called in for a the skills, which is designed to prepare them for classwork when school opens, she said. Parents were asked to work with their children during the summer so that the skills would not be forgotten. Teachers Robert Field and Joel Stewart are now working with them on drills and memorizing. Learning to multiply, knowing the times tables, is one of the most important factors in a students math program, said Mr. Field. We are using what we call the magic seven, he said. Seven is a number the human mind can more REDWOOD. A y easily grasp, so we are working just seven problems a day, he explained. This means, explained Field, that if a child is having problems with, s for example, the tables, he will select the seven numbers hardest for him and work on those numbers, writing the problem in various ways, figuring the answer, memorizing the correct answer. Students review the work daily with the teacher, he added. Many students dont get to review, which often results in forgetting the tables and thus requires re-- , teaching, observed Mr. Field. "We feel it is better by far to have daily reviews of problem numbers then the student doesnt forget the concepts, he learns them well and remembers, he added. Each person has one strong method of learning, visual, auditory or kinesthetic, explained the teacher, but all three combined offers the better way, he said. Students are given the kinesthetic approach as they walk to the board and write their problems and answers, he explained. They go through verbal drills for the auditory approach and use a computer for visual learning, he said. Computers are of great help to students, said the teacher. They can give a student problems at random, then offer the correct answer. Students can correct their own work and learn twice as fast he said. They are required each day to pass off that days work to the teacher, he added. Students can work with the computer and the computer can be programmed to give problems to fit each individual students needs, he explained. These students are doing great, they are mastering every problem, he remarked. Mr. Field wrote the computer program for the class, including a program to record scores and is evaluating the results of the program. One big advantage is that the students are really interested in the program, so they work at it, keep up with their work and enjoy learning the multiplication tables. They are ready for school to begin, he said. WEST on the TAYLORSVILLE. New time schedules will be in effect this year for students at Vista elementary.
