It was so apparent that the competitive former Granite catcher was disturbed by the loss. In many ways, this setback was harder to take than the Cottonwood loss a year earlier. That game had its own color, with brother playing against brother and Taylorsville playing the underdog role to the hilt against its parent school. But in that loss, Taylorsville played well. Cottonwood had to make the plays to win. Taylorsville didnt give up anything without a fight. That wasnt the case this time Taylorsville simply didnt play well. Sceilis club battled at the plate, but just didnt perform up to par in the field, committing five errors. Thats what made losing harder. Alta took a lead in the first when Cook doubled and came around to score on a single by Lloyd. After starting pitcher Daren Evans escaped from another jam in the second, Taylorsville rallied with three runs in the third. . With the bases loaded and one out,' Walker singled up the middle, driving in two runs. Two plays later, Phil Evans scored the third run on Kays groundout. Alta scored one run in the bottom of the inning without a hit, taking advantage of a walk and two Taylorsville errors. The score reuntil the fifth when Alta mained scored four more runs against a tirhomers by ing Evans, two-ru- n Geiselmayr and Scooter Anderson She ) The play had the potential for a Jouble play, but first baseman Walker couldnt quite reach the ball n a dive. He caught the ball on one t op, stood up, and made a second mnge in an attempt to tag Hardy. He o.dnt get him either. Sceili then brought in Walker to ool the fire. Alta had leadoff hitter t ete Morley at bat. Ferguson again i ucked conventional strategy in not icrificing the runners to second nd third. Again it worked. On a full count , itch, Morley bounced a single short and third, loading the nseswith none out. Walker didn't blow his cool in the iressure situation. He struck out i roy Cook on a low outside pitch and iad Brent Lloyd in the hole when the lta hitter hit a high chopper in the oie between short and third. Shortstop Littlewood took a couple of quick steps to his right and uackhanded the ball cleanly. But in nis haste to get the ball to the plate, he threw. Jow-.Tball skipped on t atelier Phil Evans and bounced off he webbing of his glove, allowing 'thafer to slide home with the winn-grubet-vee- n he n. Quite naturally, the Taylorsville lugout was a quiet place after the eremonial exchange of Players hung their heads, a ew had tears in their eyes. Sceili sat hand-hake- on the ground m front, rocking back nd forth. He tried to tell his wife Barbara that it was okay. It was only a game. 0 . 2 doing the damage. Sceili brought in Jim Orwin who shut down the rally. Taylorsville didnt panic, coming back with two runs on a Littlewood home run. There was a chance for more. Craig Vargo beat out an infield single. One out later, Walker walked. Taylorsville had two men on and two outs when Sceili brought in pinch hitter Shawn Lund. Alta pitcher Cook got himself into trouble with two straight balls to Lund. He then licked his fingers on the mound, prompting Sceili to protest that the spitball rule should be applied and that a third ball should be called A confusing discussion ensued between Sceili, Altas Ferguson, the umpires, State Commissioner Don Gust and fans chirping in from the background. In the end, Gust ruled as he later admitted no ball should be called Play resumed with two balls on Lund. Cook came back and struck him out. Taylorsville tied the score in the seventh when Kay singled, stole second and two outs later came home on an error Vargo gave his team the lead in the eighth when he planted a curve ball over the left field fence. The lead didnt last long, however. Alta scored three times in the bottom of the inning on four hits.
