The insurance official pointed out to the council at its Tuesday study session that, in conjunction with the Police Departments move toward a program, the citys automobile fleet had increased by 46 percent. The insurance official said most of the accidents were the result of bad driving. Among the examples he cited were officers running into fire hydrants; officers leaving the engine running and the car in gear, then stepping out of the car, whereupon it strikes another vehicle; various fender benders; and officers striking a bicyclist. The most expensive mishap, however, occurred last summer when a fire truck burned up when a crew was fighting a grass fire. That accounted for $32,000 of the $41,000 in collision claims, Sanderson noted.
