And so, the she says Pirates s Cove was born. The room selected underwent a drastic change, as students covered walls and windows with thick brown paper. Port holes were then cut at the window coverings, and pictures of sea scenes placed in them, so that, when light enters, it is like looking out of a porthole and seeing the ocean. Hansen, served with crusty french bread, relishes and dips; or french onion soup; or minestrone, loaded with vegetables and served wtih garlic bread; or maybe a cheese soup with corn bread - all served aboard a rolicking Pirate Ship with a view of the ocean through the portholes. Those already working in restaurants or fast food places can get job credit while taking the class, The maps, lanterns, and pirate music in the background, all add to the atmosphere. Being seated at a table, and then waited on by students, adds to an enjoyable luncheon, she remarks. The restaurant is open two days weekly and receiving rave reviews she concludes. "Meet you at the Cove" is coming to be an phrase at Kearns high as more and more students and d Students in the class are open to new ideas, and when teacher Leslie Hansen told them she had been approached by faculty member suggesting the class serve soup for lunch, the Covewas born. Students began the project by polling teachers to find their favorite soup. Results showed the international soups winning hands down, says Miss Hansen. ' A brainstorming session resulted in the selection of four top soups. International they are. New England clam chowder, Canadian cheese, Italian minestrone and French onion. Students then tested recipes of the four kinds, combining and changing, until they developed products they all considered a top favorite in each flavor. One of the home ec rooms would be designated as the restaurant and students began to discuss a suitable international decorating theme. Every idea was too oriented to one particular country, tells Miss Viiedim the ideal place to is from customers. Fishing nets were draped from the ceiling, shells and lanterns placed to form centerpieces on tables which were covered with checkered cloths. The Pirates Cove was ready for business. Students, Kyle Clements and James Sucese, designed menus and descriptions of the food offered. Students in the art classes followed their designs and produced the menus, tells Miss Hansen. It was then decided, she adds, to offer relish plates, dips and a choice of French, garlic or corn bread with the soup. A cash register was brought in, students taught to use it and they all practiced waiting on tables. It was found that mass production was necessary if the project was to succeed. This involved chopping pounds of celery and carrots, and peeling and slicing Fifty students have been involved in the project, and profits will go toward a class party, and visit to a honest to goodness restaurant at the end of the school year.
