Show r 5 Thursday, Mar. WEST VALLEY VIEW 19, 1981 I Every once in awhile, we a!! have the kind of day which Tom Stechschulte had last week. Stechschulte, college friend of mine, works for a geological company in Casper, Wyo. Last week he was assigned to drive to Salt Lake to conduct a training seminar for new employes had serious doubts that he would complete the trip and even that he should attempt to try. Yet, at the same time, he realized that the clouds of his misfortune were lined with streaks of good J I 4 4 : At KHS So he took all the props and rocks out of the car. One by one. All by himself. Then again, if he hadnt had to change vehicles, and unload and reload his props and rocks, and get the van licensed, he wouldnt have been on that stretch of highway during those fateful seconds when the tires broke loose from the truck, he pointed out. Quite a day. I'm sure youd agree. But, fortunately, it was over A good night's sleep and it would be a new day. Things couldnt get much worse. They didn't get worse. They didn't get better either. You heard about the vandal who went on a wild spree, shooting out car windows in Murray, Midvale and Sandy. Well, guess whose truck window . . . wasted, but he'd escaped potential serious injuries. Eventually, Tom made it to Salt Lake. After a day like that, theres nothing better than a good nights sleep. Unless, of course, somebody else is in the room you thought was yours. Whos in there? Tom asked, thinking maybe it was some of his company associates or perhaps truck to noon for those The course begins March 28 and continues for nine weeks for an $18 fee. By this point, the situation had gone beyond the point of mere frustration. Downright maddening, one might say. The kind of situation which results in verbal barrages that can turn a gray winter sky quite blue. Especially if you know Tom. Still, he was OK. When the truck was about 00 away, however, the outside tires on the two rear wheels wiggled loose and went bouncing down the freeway on their own. Not in the right lane of traffic yards To that point, about the worst that could be said was that the day had not gotten off to the best of all possible starts. Part of the morning had been wasted, but that happens now and then. Things got worse. The van loaded, Tom was ready to depart. But before he could leave, he had to get the engine checked out. And get the vans license in order. The minutes and hours were ticking away. Finally, he was ready to go. Like most of us would have felt under similar circumstances, he figured that once he was out of town and on the road, everything would go far more smoothly. Wrongo. Actually, it did for awhile. Tom was cruising down the interstate making fairly good time. A medium-sized truck was coming the opposite direction. No reason for concern, really. d of the fastgrowing firm. Heres the story as Tom (newspapers prefer to refer to people by their last names, but since Stechschulte is the type of name which really throws typesetting machines off, Ill use Tom) related it to me. Training seminars require dozens of props and lotsa paper. So Tom spent the first part of the morning company filling his economy-sizecar with the materials needed to supplement his talks. Trouble was, geologists talk about rocks and rocks tend to be heavy. Too heavy in this case for the small car, whose axle nearly dragged against the ground.
