Third grade students at South Kearns elementary are finding added interest in their Utah history and American history studies as they view paintings of Indian life and culture in their school halls. The 10 paintings were done by Sioux Gaylen Vance when he was 16 years full-blood- Varied Events old, according to prin- cipal Elmond Wilson. They include a painting of the youths grandfather, chief of the Sioux nation. Gaylen the son of Mildred Benoist Long, has a sister, Vanda Long, now in fifth grade at South Kearns. Now 19, he is studying art at Brigham Young - Slate Full At Gourley School PTA KEARNS. The Gourley elementary PTA will sponsor a girls maturation program at 7 oclock tonight (Thursday). All fifth and sixth grade girls are being invited. Girls must be accompanied by their mother or another adult. Dr. Fred Langelund will be the guest speaker. Career week will be held Tuesday through March 20. Students will be invited to write essays Tuesday on what they wish to do after graduation. On Thursday, representatives from a variety of careers and jobs will visit the school and discuss their careers and educational nrrm nnm -- require rai ments with students. On Friday the students essays will be posted in the school halls for everyone to read. A parenting workshop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on March Parents interested in attending are being asked to register by Monday. The discussion Monday will be themed on how to help a child succeed in school. Stake Leaders Plan Conference MAGNA. Tom L. Bird, president of Magna stake, along with Joseph E. Finch and Richard C. Mantle, is planning for stake conference sessions to be held March 21 and 22, which will be under the direction of Philip T. Sonntag, regional representative. The message for the conference will be centered around missionary work. The Saturday night meeting at 7 oclock will be open to all adults and young adults age 16 and older. Sunday at 8:30 - a. m. ' youth session will be held and the general session will begin at 10. Both are open to all members and their friends. Parents and students at Kearns junior high are being invited to attend IEP (Individual Educational Program) conferences to be held Tuesday and March 19 at the school. PTA representatives will call parents to schedule the appointments, according to principal Dr. Woody Clayton. Conferences will be arranged from 1 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a lunch break from 4:30 to 5:30 and from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, he said. Parents and students will meet with students advisory teachers to discuss SAT test results, registration for the 1981-8- 2 school year and any problems or schedule changes or questions. We want to invite all our parents to come and bring their students with them. We would love to see every parent connected with our school visit with us on these days.
