I think Ive had about all I can take of this insulting commercialization of Abes and my birthday. Im sick and tired of seeing our pictures used and abused the way they are on those absurd Presidents Day advertisements, which say a whole lot more about the greed of those responsible than they do about whatever patriotism they might have, he said. "Like just the other day, I heard a radio ad, with a couple whos supposed to be my wife, Martha, and I, getting all excited about some he went on. Talk about ridiculous. And not so typical because I wasnt an- ticipating George on the other side of the door when I got up from the couch to ans- wer the bell. Visibly tired from a month or so of celebrating his 249th birthday, George stood there on my doorstep, appearing much like artist Arnold Friberg conceived him to be in his Prayer at Valley Forge painting. For a long time now, your politicians and economists have been saying that somethings got to be done about the shrinking value of your dollar. Glancing around the front room of my apartment while seated on the couch, he noticed on the table in front of us, a dollar bill waiting to be broken in the morning when I wake up to the coffee of a nearby convenience store. Well, first of all, ing, and I was exactly after the extended 1981 fete, that he saw the light on through the apartment window, and figured it might be a good place to catch a breather and some warmth before signing off for another year. And so I welcomed George in, and in doing so I could clearly see that he was discouraged. Whats the partentic- what to fix self for a by Tom Smith By this time, the human noisemakers downstairs had quieted down and apparently turned in for the evening, and static was the featured program on all TV channels. And George, along with his host growing increasingly sleepy, started to mellow somewhat, too, as he added that there were other events and circumstances over the years that had left him and his revolutionary comrades in varying states of shock and disappointment. Things like our nations present handgun lunacy, the polluting of our environment (he recalled that our creator had voiced the same displeasure In a movie called Oh, God a few years back) and the efforts of a score of other selfish-interelobby groups who pursue their petty objectives with little or no concern about the impact they might have on the general ' populace. And your occassional nationwide outbursts of patriotism, like in 1976 when you observed the Bicentennial and a few weeks ago when the hostages came home from Iran they make your founding fathers feel mighty good, George said with a smile. Then, exiting my apartment and climbing aboard the horse he had parked outside, George said he knew that its unrealistic to expect perfection, that it isnt possible to enjoy a good life without experiencing some problems along the way. But wanting to have my birthday cake and eat it too had always been one of my hangups, j George admitted. Only one county player can play; the county player will use the white game piece. (NOTE: As the County, by the rules of the game, can only take a passive part in play, it is not necessary that any person use the white (county) game piece. Any object can be assigned to move the white piece as the county cant do anything to stop Land Grab anyway. Also note that one of the black (city) game pieces is larger than the others. This game piece is the largest city and gets two turns in a row, as it can afford the most in attorneys fees.) Object of the game: To grab (annex) the most tax producing land from the county and to add this tax base to the cities. This continues until the only land remaining in the county is vacant land, farms and a limited amount of low tax producing homes. The city that grabs (annexes) the most tax producing land is the winner. (Note: In playing this game, the wishes of the people living within the County must be completely disregarded.) Game Play: 1. Each city player places his black game piece in one of the city areas. (Note: The large black piece must be plac (Note: The tax producing land to be grabbed must be adjoining the city limits unless tht city has a Devious Method Card. Refer to Devious Method Card. Also remember that the largest city gets two turns.) 3. After each city has had a turn, the County throws the dice, but cannot move as the white game piece is glued to the game board. This play only gives the county a chance to look around to see what the cities are doing. 4. Play continues as above until all or most of the taxable land within the county is grabbed (annexed) by the cities. 5. In this game it is hard to determine who is the winner, but the loser will always be the county- Devious Method Cards: At the first of each game, each city is given one (1) each of the below listed Devious Method Cards. These cards are used at any time during the game to grab land not adjoining a city. Card 1 - Surround an Area: With this card a city can grab a small amount of land, surrounding a large land area. Using this card a city can hold large amounts of land without grabbing it and can keep this land from being grabbed by other cities. Also the city can make the county pay for all services within this surrounded area until it is developed into tax producing land. After the of the Northeast corner of 6200 S. and 40th West. The surrounding property owners met with the developer and with each other. In approximately one week, over 600 persons signed petitions which took a strong stand against the project. A great many children pass through the area targeted for commercial and twin home development and the traffic flow and safety problems are serious. 5. The persons living around the proposed development site have reasonable expectations that the area will remain as somewhat residential. It is unfair to allow a developer to drop relatively high density housing in and lower the values of surrounding property. In the end, it is not the developer who must live with his project. It is the people of the community. The great majority of community residents who have taken the time to become informed on this issue have taken a stand of firm opposition to this proposal. ty Ronald Schneider Schneider Youth Is Eagle Scout TAYLORSVILLE.
