By Jay Bebbin, Tribune Media Services To legions of devotees, it's an inconceivable question, but many people Still are likely to ask it this week: “Who is Doctor Who?” Those who don't know can find out Tuesday, as Fox broadcasts a new TVmovie version of the classic British Science-fiction series that aired in its home countryfrom 1963 to 1989, and also had a healthy life in America via a syndicated ran on many PBS affiliates. Paul McGann ("Alien 3") becomes the latest of eight actors to assume the role of the so-called Time Lord - with Sylvester McCoy, the Previous one, turning up in an opening Cameoto “regenerate” The Doctor into S new appearance -- as the time-tray¢ling character and his TARDISvehicle, which externally resembles a London become stuck in San Francisco on the eve of the Upcoming millennium. re, he pursues his enemy The Master (Eric Roberts) with the help of a heart surgeon (Daphne Ashbrook) who unwittingly “killed” Doctor Who While believing she was saving his life, not realizing at the time that he Possesses TWO hearts. Since Time Lordshave 12 lives, four remain for Doctor ... a fact that both Fox and England's BBC (which co-produced the film) are counting on rather heavi'y, since at press time, a new “Doctor Who"series was being considered as a SeaQuest DSV's” launchi classic in every senseoftt in some ways, he's a litte oit of an anti-hero. Unless you have the right sense of humor and danger and sense of whimsy, it's very difficult to play, because it shifts tonally. If you cross that center line that makes it believable, (the character) becomes almost psychoticand silly.” In regard tothe selection of McGann to becomethe latest Doctor, Jo Wright -- the executive producer for the BBC on the project -- says the casting of that role “is very important to the people of England, because they've gone through seven (others in the part) before this one. It had to be a very good actor, because he has to play someone whois a time-traveler and takes that seriously. It's not camped up; he actually believes in it, and always, the best science fiction is (created when) the person whoplays it believes in the show.” Since "Doctor Who” has the same sort of faithful and passionate fans as have followed "Star Trek” and "The X-Files,” the trick in reviving it is to acknowledge those who know the saga thoroughly, yet make it accessible to newcomers. Segal vows that those who already are loyal followers will “enjoy the incredible adventure. If you've never seen the show, there is a wonderful love story (between The Doctor and the Ashbrook character) that in some ways has the warmth and the fun of the ‘Romancing the Stone’ relationship.” Segal knows firsthand the dedication of "Doctor Who” fans, since many of them attend annual Appreciation Society gatherings that celebrate the series. Those events can be likened to "Star Trek” conventions or even "Rocky Horror Picture Show” screen- ings, since he reports, “They dress up. They really care, and | think what we mustn't forgetis that they have kept (the show) alive. There are little pieces of the mythology that are very special to every person, and I think definite Possibility for next season, The Doctor, over the years, has that'sterrific.” Meanwhile, Wright alsocredits those 1, SAYSCO-executive producer Phil about "Doctor Who,” but still have peo. an incredibly special charac- Britons who might not be as fervent Segal, who also’ hid @ major yaad respected and enjoyed the program 5:00 A.M. It's a realinstitution.” Allowing that “There's a lot more science fiction out now than there used to be, obviously,” Wright claims the factor that sets "Doctor Who" apart is "the humor. Often, sciencefiction takes itself very seriously, and | think American tans like humor.” However, she adds that doesn't necessarily dictate a comedic approach: "As long as it's entertaining. | think science fiction is a very good place to also make you think. You can take (a given issue) to a different planet, then actually parallel something like racism. Science fiction has given people a new way of looking at the same things.” Because "Doctor Who" has aired at various times on public television, its American ratings have been difficult to track but Segal maintains that whenever it's been missing, people have knownit. “Like anything running for 26 years, people took it for granted,” he reasons. “What's nice is that it's like ‘Star Trek’ in that whenit went away, everybody started to say, ‘Let's have it back.’ All the people who loved it are desperate for tt, which is a muchnicer position to be in.” Indeed, Segal has his own ongoing association with "Doctor Who.” He recalls, "When I was little boy, | would sit with my grandfather and watchit. You hear this all the time, but 1 was petrified; | could not watch it alone. Someone had to be in the room with me, and my grandfather was the one who introduced me to the (original) William Hartnell episodes. Then | watched it with my parents, and hopefully, my son will watch it now. That's four generations, The Doctor has never ceased to di int us.” Copyright 1996 |.
