Show Learning to Read Changes Businessman’s Life Thursday, Decemb ber A39-year-old Orem man who hadtwosuccessful businesses registered for a business class at Utah Technical College at Provo-Orem There was one key difficulty. He couldn't read beyond a fourth gradelevel. Confessing his handicap, he was assigned to Ann Barnes, educational psyc ist at the col- lege. Some tests, learning instruction and some sympathy and understanding, and he waslearning to read. He learned to read rapidly, going from a fourth grade level to a college level in three quarters. It changed his life A 20-year-old man came to Mrs. Barnesand told her: “I'm a slow learner. I'm even retarded.’’ Immediately sensing that he wasn’t, from the manner in which he stated his problem, Mrs. Barnes gave him a simple 1.Q. test. He scored average. She started from there, finding out why he had been led to believe he was retarded, giving him confidence in himself, and assigned him to classes which would build up his skills he had already missed. He will enter a trades program next quarter.
