(NEA) — She paces back and forth across the stage, her voice filling the auditorium aroundher, her fist punctuating the air with determination Terri Lee is rehearsing for her debutata local countryclub. Later this year she will take her act to a tony club in New York City Aroundher, three back-up musiciansin blue jeans and sweatshirts — they play drums, bass and electric guitar — keep time while engineers work the lights and the sound system and friendslisten from strategic parts of the audience. ‘The guitar is Genuine tIsnes! When I'm working at a regular office job that’s not the case.” The best part of the rehearsal for Andy is when he takes over the drumsfrom his uncle Scott, one of Miss Lee's back-up musicians. “Andyreally loves music,”’ she says. ‘Helikes to bang around on thepianoa little, but I think he's really more interested in drums. “Sometimesthereis tension during rehearsal, but there’s a lot of happiness there, too. Andy has adjusted to that Whenhe savshis prayersat night he blesses everyone, ‘hca says ‘and God bless rehearsal, too.’ “I can’t dedicate the time to him right nowthat I havein the past and that I wouldlike to, but the time we have together is quality time. He and I have been through a lot of heartaches together.’ too loud,” they say. “We can’t hear you.” Beneath the stage, 3-year-old Andy runs around in circles, squealing, delighted with his mother’s music, the cushioned floor on which he can roll and tumbleand the abundanceof attention from allthose friends and relatives who are doing their part to make Terri Lee a star. If there is confusion in the room, Miss Lee doesn’t letit reach her. She is at her piano now, singing soft- * ly. She is determined to get her song across, to perfect a note here, project another there. A dise jockey in Philadelphia told her tha: she % would makeit in show business. He knew she would, he said, because he had never met anyone who wanted it more That single-minded determination is evident in everything that Miss Lee says and sings and does. She struggles with the burdens and relishes the joysof being a single parent. She worksfull time as a secretary to support herself and Andy, and rehearses every night to feed her soul. There is no timeleft over for a sociallife. Jack Weyland’s delightful spoof on BYU, dating, and the family (Mafia style). This rib-tickling play written by the author of Charley and Sam, will leave you chuckling as the daughter of a rich New Yorker looks for happiness by pretending to be a “Utah Mormon.’ A play saturated with characters you'll like and situations you've experienced...a guaranteed evening of fun piano, but no one could play it. Then one night Terri's parentsleft her with a babysitter who entertained thelittle girl by playing tunes on the instrument. The next morning, Terri’s parents awoke to the sound of music — their preschooler was playing the tunes she had heard the night before. That was the beginning of piano and musiclessons that would go on for another eight years. By the time she was 12, Terri had started writing her own songs. She was offered a spot on a Philadelphia television program. ‘‘But they wouldn’t let mesing the song I had written,” she recalls. ‘I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but I just couldn’t do that.I’m anoriginalartist, my music is important to me.” At 13, she began studying voice and stopped her pianolessons. ‘‘I just didn’t want to play classical anymore,” she says. “I wanted to play my own music.” She got married at 19. The marriage didn’t work, and Miss Lee was on her own with a small baby to care for. She went to work asa secretary. These days sheis up every morning at6:30 “‘to try and keep up with the housecleaning” before she showersand dresses. ‘‘At 8:15, I wake up Andy, get him washed and dressed, and then take him to the babysitter’s house,” she says. » vee ° Margetts Arena Theatre Mon.-Sat 9:30-6:00 Mini-Mall SKI-WEAR .= = ¢, Sy,*- Nylons - Corduroys - Denim orn, = T-SHIRT For Information orTickets Call The Pardoe Box Office, HFAC, 378-3875 General Admission $2.75 Senior Citizens $2.00 SOLIDS 0%oF= ie Lined or Uniined one, Under "30 Collection.
