Orem Neighbors Form Crime Watch By DAWN TRACY Herald Staff Writer In an effort to reduce homeburglariesin the city, Orem has instigated a neighborhood crime watch program in which neighbors watch out for each other's property. “The program sharpened our desire to watch out for our neighbors,” says block captain Mona Madsen, who organized the Sunnylane neighborhood crime watch group. “We're closer as a neighborhood and we’re less reluctantto call police when somethingoutof the ordinary happens now.”” Crimeprevention officer Garry Guymon from the Orem Police Department says the principle behind the program is that neighbors get to know each other's routines so anything suspiciousis immediate. ly reported. “We want people to call us,” says Guymon. “It takes about 15 minutesto check out a call but many man-hours are spent investigating a burglary. We'd rather prevent a crime of course, than investigate it.” Neighbors are encouraged to organize into blocks with a captain who sets up a neighborhood meeting. policeofficer then comesand explainshowto identify suspicious behavior, how to report crimes, what to do to secure homes and how toprotect property. “People become more aware of their neighbors and their own property,” says Guymon. “If a car drives down thestreet at night withoutlights, people are morelikely to reportit after the learning sessions. “People are also taught that when they call us, they should first state the problem and then answer questions the dispatcher asks in order to assess our response to the call. This saves. us time and we are able to be more helpful quicker.” At the neighborhood learning meeting, engravers may be borrowed to mark valuables. The program wasinstigated in April of this year after burglaries in Orem had shot up from an average of 12.5 a month to 33 homeburglaries in March. “With the current economicsituation, people need to band togetherto help one another,’ says Guymon. “And if we help each other, somewhere along the line, someoneis going to help us too.” " Last seven days to save on all these regularstock designer cut fabrics for school and fall wardrobes - once-a-year reductions from our usual sale prices; sorry, no phone or mail orders ¢Brushed Knits Flannels eRobe Velours ¢Batique Prints s Shear 2” ue en e ¢Shirting Plaids Border Prints ¢ Tropical Prints ¢Famous Mill Dress Prints Dressmaker tl] ¢Sportswear ¢Denims -Corduroys Juvenile T- Shirexnies Stretch 2.69 4.79 Denim cinghams Values to 6.99 yd.
