Naismith, in 1891, and the first people to play baskethall were Americans In 1891, when he invented basketball, Young i i (YMCA) in Springfield, Mass. It was winter, and he noticed that manyofhis students weren't interested in formal gym exercises. What they needed, he thought, was a fast-action game played indoors when the football season ended. He decided some kind of game in which players would have to throw a ball into baskets would be interesting. So he attached a couple of old peach baskets to the ends of the gym balcony. In the early days a soccer ball was used. Every time a goal was made, Someone had to climb a ladder to get the ball out of the basket. After a while wire mesh baskets were used. In 1906 the metal hoop similarto that of today was used for the first time. At first when a basket was missed, the ball would go into the crowd. This caused much delay. Then backboards were put up so the ball would bounce back into the playing court. When the gamewas first played, nine men formed a team. Later it was changed to permitnine,sevenorfive to play.
