The organization that grew outofhis feelings is now called the Intermountain Professional Photographers Association (IPPA) an organization of professional photographers centered in the two main states of Utah and Idaho and scattered through parts of many others. In a history of the IPPA written into the program for its 1979 convention, the observations were made that: ‘As the past presidents began compiling and reminiscing about those early years and events one particular name kept coming up. “Gean Worthington was the ee primarily responsible for getting an early group of prcsonraphers together in the hopes of a permanent organization.” And even though interest grew and waned for several years, the groundwork that Mr Worthington did finally took root and grew. He saic that 1979 marks the 25th anniversary of the. founding of the organization that finally took shape andsolidified into the Intermountain Professional Ph ‘tographers Association in 1954. In recognition of Mr. Worthington’s ‘‘service to professional photography" in helping found the IPPA, The Professional Photographers of America, Inc., to which ss y R | S ye —m eventys { Mission Bookstore 148 N. 100 W. Provo 373-3083 GEAN WORTHINGTON IPPA is affiliated, has given him its national award. The national award is offered by the PP of A to state and regional affiliated associations on a yearly basis. First madeavailable in 1958, the award recognizes thuse persons who generously contribute their time and talents to the service of their profession, their affiliated organization and their fellow photographers. Selection of the award is determined by the recipient's peers which addsto its distinction and value. The PP of A is the oldest and largest association of professional photographers in the world with headquarters in Des Plaines, Ill. The organization provides educational services and establishes standardsof professional performanceforits 17,000 members and 165 local, state, regional andinternationalaffiliates. Mr. Worthington's interest in photography began while he was a Provo Scout Earns His Eagle Badge Larry Baer, son of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Baer, was awarded his Eagle Scout badge at a recent court of honor. Larry is a member of Troop 194 in the Provo 24th Ward, Provo North Stake. Larry is in the eighth grade at Dixon Junior High School, where he is an honor student and particularly enjoys math and music. Among his favorite pastimes are skiing, basketball and baseball. Hehas servedasassistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader and deacon’s quorum president For his Eagle project, Larry designed and constructed an irrigating senior in high school in 1929. After graduation in Januaryof 1930, he went back east to the New York Institute of Photography where heat tended ten hours a dayfor 90 days which was equivalent of one year's attendance which qualified him for gradua- tion After returning to his home town of Nephi, he migrated to Payson in 1934 while in the employment of Christensen’s Inc., a department store which still operates in Payson. Heworked at the store but did photography on the side until World War Il. “Then,” hesaid, “the war came along and you couldn't do photography or anything because there was just nothing available.” But as soon as the war was over he opened up a studio which he has operated untilsellingit in 1977.
