three are from brigham they are AT R ensign warren knudson and myself most alosi of tho the big educators know about mormonism and respect it and our utah educators have scores ot of I 1 friends at cornel corne 1 l however an occasional reak freak ot of na ture comes along and such a freak came cama to ithaca nov 20 last in the calendar calendar 0 oc the cornell corneil dally daily sun of that date it was announced that mrs airs mrry atry C bliss would speak that even in li goa igon g oa mormonism a menace to the united states at the mill st methodist church of 0 course all of us utah students wore were present to learn how our church was such a menace and I 1 must confess that I 1 have been taught the wrong mormonism it if mrs bliss Is correct in her charges this being the first anti mormon that I 1 ever heard it was amusing at times and very exasperating at other times just to suppose that mrs bliss that reasoning beings would believe her was shocking her talk in part Is as follows pictures of joseph and hyrum smith were thrown on the canvass and mrs bliss began to say in one of aesoph Ae sops tables fables it tells of astronomers who that they had bad discovered a sun spot but when the telescope was was examined a ly fly fell out yowl now she continued boti you people might think that what I 1 am going to say is on the sanle aldei about mor mon monism hionis mi but I 1 tati cart assum i rd iou mor monism ig 13 ha dy uy ln in a telescope and belote before you is joe smith the founder of this menacing religion she then related joseph smiths history saying that he was from a visionary family and that one of hi his uncles had turned the heads of many new england people just before joseph was born she said joseph was the black blacksheep beep heep of nine children was raised in ignorance gnor ance and that at sixteen he eloped and got married she showed the usual characters of the book of mormon as are given by lambs the golden bible found in our public library and said that in the me first edi edition of t ane book nf f mormon joseph smith signed ills his name author and proprietor which is true but it was done for a reason that is well known by our people speaking of josephs father as a dreamer she related gehis dream in I 1 nephi esth chapter and said it was joseph smith sr dream about the smith family she told of the persecution of our people and that wherever they went their neighbors were soon aware of the saints character and soon drove them from their borders now fayette where the church was organized is just a few miles north of ithaca on the scores of lake cayuga which can be seen from any part of town and she took particular pains to tell the people that this terrible church was organized in the border county on the north of theirs perhaps to bring things nearer home the hill cumorah is not far from fayette showing a church in Aliss missouri ourt she said that in that church the I 1 mormons cormons once got to qu quarreling and fighting with knives and it if the outsiders had not intervened all the mormons cormons would have been killed in telling of josepn smiths death she said now friends smith died with a six shooter in ills his hand as he had had atall it all of hla his life ile he was un der perfect guard but you know as a man inan sows bows so shall he reap and smith reaped his reward she then spoke of 0 the quarreling for the presidency and that brigham young by his personality got for himself the position and went on mexican soil ill n order to practice nig his licentious cent tent ious ious religion as our leaders go to mexico at present for the same reason she spoke of brighams Brig hams open rebellion to the government and said that even joseph smith had dared to run for president of the united states and usurped the title lieutenant tenant gea general t M hed of the nauvoo le giona title held by no one she said except washington hor her references to brigham young were numerous but she elbe emphasized the fact that when he died he was worth and that after his death the church took from his estate that he had stolen from the tithing she called attention to the fact that even on his monument he Is holding lila ills hand nd out to tho the bank while his back is turned toward the temple she even had a story botell of how the vermont building received its nime name and the churchs churche traffic in liquor in the utah hotel joseph and hyrum smiths monuments on the salt lake temple grounds north of the bureau of information were shown and she said we were fond of showing these to strangers she said it Is customary to build monuments to the memory of people and erect them in their native state but here is a great exception cep tion no doubt she knows nothing of joseph smiths monument in sharon Sl iaron vermont nor of its enormous size on the subject of temples she said that only high officials could enter and that to get in a man must pay 5 for himself and each of his many wives and he must buy three bottles of oil at per for himself and each of his wives the church manufactured this oil in salt lake and that similar sized bottles could be bought for in any drug store she said that when the candidates for administration were well greased with this oil they could go thru the temple and then proceeded to tell of the terrible oaths taken in the temple and of the secret marriages there these oaths were to avenge tile death ot of joseph smith A picture supposed to be of the garments was shown but it was a common pair of ladies union suits with some halo holes cut in them and the they Y were ivere made to button aown own the back she said that some had bad a mark on the knee klate which meant that if they broke their oaths their knee oapl cap would be removed she told them that each person was wag given a secret name that must not be spoken aloud this she said is a mormon trick to get to heaven because they know where they belong so when john jones jone s dies and satan tries to claim him he will say to st peter my aly name Is hoses sift john jones and thus he hei hopes to his way to heaven the st george and mantl temples were shown and also a temple that she said was in provo but we all rec zeNas as the one at logan speaking of politics she told of the domination by pres joseph F smith and that utah voted as he dictated she said that each around the city with joseph P F smith then they went to the bee hivo hive house and behind closed doors joseph F smith gave mr air taft the utah vote she claimed that this was because one of mr tafts residence denee on forest and w west cst streets as an illustration as to how tithing was spent she did not forget polygamy and said it was still practised practiced and showed pictures of girls being forced into polygamy and mentioned the list of names published by the salt lake tribune of polygamous carrl marriages I 1 ages ance 1890 she told how readily the pretty young girls were taken by the old men she said that all the old maids were married to dead mor mons she showed another of mr air nuttings cuttings Nut tings pictures of a poorly clad woman and her son living in a hut but mr air nutting affirmed that he had bad supper with this lady mrs bliss told the history of this poor lady and Is as follows A mormon had been trying to get her to marry him so rne lie persuaded her to go fo ra awn pg vili him r a closed cab su sn allty alit v ifft ll orrid id ond and tl ti y went into r P room with curtains stretched across she heard someone speaking from behind this curtain and when they returned to the cab she was driven to this hut and was informed that she had been married to hm bm as his second wife the next morning he left and she does not know where he i n now one night about mid this poor woman came to frank J cannon and begged him to do something so she be could get justice but mr cannon said he be could not since she had no marriage certificate the people were warned about the mormon missionaries and sae told the people how to receive the missionaries she bald said the best way was ivas to give elve them a cold bath and lid bid them go on their r journey I 1 suppose she calls this Christain Christ aln hospital s S she lle said that recently the church had sent fifteen girls from maine alaine to 10 utah thus violating the mann white slave act and that the church got a rebate from the steamship companies ies and railroad c companies 6 for every person sent to utah she showed the B Y university and the latter day saints university as types of our island chief then she told of her visit to president smiths office and said well really I 1 think he is mighty good looking and very attractive anyway then she showed a picture of george Q cannon franklin D richards francis AT lyman and joseph F smith in prison suits about 1888 and said she wished ahat that all of our leaders were there at present I 1 did not think that picture was a disgrace when we reflect that even christ and his apostles were in prison for their arm belle belief then she showed the barracks at fort douglas and sala it was a polygamy home when the man fell out with one bif wife e all he did was swing around the porch post and he was home with another one the gee bee hive house was showed as the homo home of brigham young and his wives and said that it was customary fa act et that in utah millions of children wore were calling caling to the law and the peo pea tle of this nation to give them a name and legalize their birth these were the poor polygamy children she realize that there were several ot of these children at her lee ice tur and that polygamous children form the backbone of the mormon church senator smoot was not forgotten she told bow he h flaunted daunted himsel before the people in washington washingto eli by lly ing in one of the best houses in one of the most prominent residence sections she said he hd too much power as chairman of how bow lie he spent the tithing and also account for the money and property given back to the church at the time of state hood and to again confiscate the church property 3 forbid the use of malls in sending mormon literature 4 reopen re open the smoot investigation and if possible take statehood state hood from utah her last picture was the stars and stripes but the people in the audience did not applaud until mrs bliss asked them to recognize their flog flag this was very peculiar after her long talk on our lack of patriotism the city papers nor their ministers did not even comment on her talk and several members expressed their regret at allowing her to talk tala she certainly had a cold reception at the close of her talk there was more interest shown when the minister expressed himself as being in favor of woman suffrage every word she uttered told of her utter hatred and jealousy of the church she was brazen in her talk and really disgusting in her attitude GEORGE L ZUNDEL
