I j ' i , ; i . AS IT STANDS now the high school clubs get weathered out most of their season and then try to play all their games in a two week period. The weather here in Utah during the springtime just isnt what you would call ideal baseball weather. Some people have come up with the idea of having the school programs run in the summertime with fulltime coaches being paid. Others point that the American Legion program is for the summer. THAT BRINGS up the big question, what about this American Legion program? They call it that because the American Legion is supposed to run the league and sponsor the teams, but in reality very few Posts, as they are called, actually put any money into the program or have anything to do with it. True there are some Posts that put a lot of time and money into the program but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. ALL ALONG summer to increase his college offers. Pitching is a major key to any ball club and Post 79 is blessed with a bunch of top notch hurlers. Leading the way is Steve Hilton who helped Bountiful to a region title two years ago and who has just finished his first year pitching for the University of Utah. BOUNTIFUL If the experts are right then keep in the back of your mind the American Legion Post 79 baseball team. They could very well turn out to be one of the top clubs in the state this summer. After all, the clubs in neighboring states all do it and they have the upper hand over Utah teams in regional competition. Rowdies Place High In League. THE OLDER people, those graduated from high school that year, seemed to be wrapped up in other things other than baseball. Work always seems to get in the way. The younger ones have jobs also but they still seem to have more time and desire, according to this source. High school coaches would certainly like to see their team for the coming season get a summer of playing tough competition under their belts. THIS NEW league would also cut out the possibility of a kid coming back from one year of college and playing. According to some people this hurts the American Legion program. Something is wrong when the number of teams in the league drops from eight to six, which includes one new club. That means three, teams from the previous year dropped out. SOMEBODY OUGHT to take a long hard look at the way the American Legion program is going and come up with some ideas to improve it.
