" By GARY R. BLODGETT :r FRUIT HEIGHTS If was beautiful. Davis County is truely a beautiful site from - : the hillside looking out over the farmlands to the Great Salt Lake. quail hunting is anything like quail counting, its a tedious, -- ; but enjoyable sport. THE SUN was not yet over I WENT quail counting the the mountain tops, it was cool, and it was serene. other morning, bright and early it was, with Davis Theres no better way to County Conservation Officer Allan Hash. We spent the early morning hours in the foothills east of Fruit Heights. ONLY problem wais that it was so enjoyable tromping the hills in the - .stillness of the day that I for- got what I was there for to help Warden Hash flush and count quail, both adults and their young. ' It was not only enjoyable, it Allan Hash, Davis County conservation officer, takes a breather while using binoculars to seek out quail durin g a recent quail bird count along the Wasatch Front east of Fruit Heights. ; , describe it. But back to the quail counting job we were summoned to do, Allan because its part of his profession and myself because I offered to "get up much earlier than usual and join him in this venture. I LEARNED that there is only one type of quail in Davis County called the California Quail, a beautiful bird. The female lays between nine and 15 eggs, but it is fortunate if all the young survive, for one reason or another. WE SAW only one brood as a family unit, a male and female and seven young. The other eight or ten sightings were adults only, either singles or in pairs. I learned that when you see one adult, its mate is usually nearby. If you wait patiently, and quietly, the other bird will usually appear from a nearby clump of oak or other natural cover. QUAIL WILL usually call to M llllllimll each other during the early morning, but we didnt hear any such calling. So our job was to walk stop Then and listen. proceed with caution because it may be quail you are seeking or it might be skunk that you want nothing to do with. WE SAW two of the latter, a baby skunk that enticed us to go back and get the gun we had left in the truck and a second skunk that 'Mas hot with said gun. I dont mind killing skunks at this time of year we have an over population in the area and they are a real menace to the bird population, said Officer Hash. They will eat the eggs because of any bird whether it be quail, pheasant, chukar, or whatever. HE NOTED that the one covey of quail we flushed with seven young probably was only a partial family. The brood usually consists of at least nine young so all I can do is assume that a few of the young did not survive rnd were probably the victims of larger birds, like magpies or hawks, or were eaten by a skunk, said Officer Hash. THE CONSERVATION of- ficers also noted that there are a few fox along the Wasatch Front in Davis County who cause problems with young birds. There are a few red and gray fox that have been seen in the area in recent years, he said. I havent seen any myself, but I have reports of confirmed sightings by reputable residents. A FOX was seen further south, near Interstate Highway 80, east of Salt Lake City a couple of months ago. Officer Hash noted that domestic cats and dogs, SILLS CAFE is now open 24 hours a day COME IN AND SEE US ANY TIME 281 So. lYiain, Layton 376-90- 96 which have been seen often roaming the hillsides, also are the culprits of many bird losses. HE SAID that quail usually will not migrate and will e remain within about a radius of where they are born. It is at this time of year that a trend in the bird population is often noticed due to the hatching success rate, said Officer Hash. Primarily, the count is necessary to determine the increase or decrease in number of birds in the area and to help establish any hunting restrictions." one-mil- HE SAID the bird count for granddaughters birthday anniversaries.
