Archers are not required to wear hunter orange while hunting big game during the hunts. r Practice is the key to a successful archery hunt. Only after the individual can consistently hit what he is shooting at from ranges of yards are the chances of a successful hunt increased. Prospective archery hunters should soon begin scouting out deer habits of the area to be hunted. fl August-Septemb- i I f j er 20-4- 0 t IT OFTEN helps to mark out specific ranges from the archers stand if still hunting in order to lessen the possibility of an error in distance judgement. Camouflage clothing is recommended as it increases the hunters opportunity to get close shots. All hunting should be done into the wind as big game have an acute sense of smell which alert them of the archers presence long before he can be seen. cause The deer archery season opens state wide on August 18 and runs thru September 3, 1979 for the taking of one buck deer. An archery permittee may also harvest a buck deer during the archery season using the regular deer license and tag. ARCHERY PERMITS will be sold upon personal or mailed application at any of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources offices; or from authorized license agents by personal application only. Davis county archers should not overlook deer hunting in the mountains east of the valley. In a recent drive up Farmington Canyon 23 deer were observed from the road, 19 of which were bucks and three were trophy class animals. There is an abundance of deer in Davis County which can provide the archer with some exciting hunting if he will take the time to scout the area out. Anchoring: Important Part Of Safe Boating U water depth. and boat navigation handling but they neglect the importance of proper TO RAISE ,the anchor, which most likely is deep into become very proficient in anchoring procedure. - THE U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary stresses that the art of anchoring, which some skippers regard as simple, should be mastered by every boatman because it can be vital for protection of both life and vessel. Newcomers to boating tend to do it all -- wrong. To hold a vessel securely, the anchor and right-siz- e proper length and size of rope-o- r line are essential. Many boats carry at least two anchors; a lightweight one for use in good weather and in protected anchorages; a heavy one for use in bad weather or for overnight anchoring when there might be danger of dragging. A BOATING novice should get expert advice or manufacturers recommendations in selecting anchors and proper ground tackle. There are many types on the market. A rule of thumb on proper length of the anchor line is five to seven feet of line for every foot of water depth at the point of anchoring. IN ANCHORING, only an amateur tosses it overboard with a giant heave. The proper method is to lower the anchor slowly into the water until it reaches bottom. Then drift, row or back your vessel until the anchor bites bottom, playing out line to the proper length for the the bottom, start the engine and put your boat directly over the anchor, then trip it. Ordinarily it will break free of the bottom when the line stands vertically. It can then be raised to the deck and stowed. If the anchor does not break free with a- - good vertical yank, secure the line to a bitt, go slowly ahead a few yards. It probably is fouled if iuloes not break free. Running' the boat in wide circles on a taut line may help. But if it will not break loose, run up as close as possible, cut the anchor line and attach a marker float to the remaining end. So you can attempt to retrieve the anchor later. MAYBE YOUR skin-divin- g friends can help with this bit of salvage. No skipper of any vessel should take to the waters without proper anchor and line board for the area to be navigated. Concrete blocks, chunks of steel casting or pieces of heavy metal are not anchors. The prudent boater will never venture forth with anything but the recommended anchor and ground tackle for the vessel. THE ART of anchoring, the and various types characteristics of anchors, and techniques that will help the novice boater avoid problems are covered in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's free public boating courses. Experts Give Tips On How To Hit By DAVE WIGHAM - No matter BOUNTIFUL which sport you like the best or think is the hardest one of the most inconsistent things in sports is that of hitting a ball with a bat. FACE IT, it must be tough if the experts think youre great if you can do it three out of every ten times you try. No other sport thinks of you as a great success with a thirty percent average. This column isnt going to give you any new ideas or the big secret method of hitting. What this article is about is having talked to many coaches, professional players and amateurs. These are some of the suggestions that kept coming up time after time. 1. KNOW WHAT youre go- ing to do before you step into the batters box. Know the outs, where men are on base, what the pitcher seems to be throwing. Also realize what the coach wants you to do. 2. Believe in the power of positive thinking. Believe that the pitcher cant throw the ball past you, let alone three strikes. Display this con- 3. STAND THE proper distance from the plate as your swing dictates. If you stand too close or too far away the pitcher will probably work on the corners. 4. The most important step comes into play here. Relax. Do not be tense no matter what the situation. A good way to relax, at least for one professional player, is to simply lower the lower lip. Try it. & AS THE pitcher starts the motion, be ready. Always be in a position to hit the ball, if it's not a strike you can always let it go by, but if you want to hit the ball its tough if you havent started your motion. To stop swinging at the ball simply drop the The first person to come into play is the timer, who uses a chronomix which is a printing timer. Chapel Street Park; 125 lbs. chute attendants. Each runner at the start of the race is given a number. Also on that number is a label with the runners name and number on it. This piece of paper is a pressure sensitive label that when taken off the number goes on the order of finish cards. SO NOW the runner has crossed the line, his time is recorded by a timer, he is given a card with his order of finish on it by another person and now a third person takes this label off his number and onto the card he has been given. These chute attendants then hand the cards to the card sorter, there are two of them, who put them in sequence and division. The label also has the age and division the runner is competing in. THE NEXT step is for the time recorder to record all the information off of the cards and put the time off the tape and then all the information is recorded and on one card. This is only one method used in marathons, if the system runs smoothly then its effective. They have meetings for all these people to discuss their responsibilities and how to carry them out.
