Getting to his high school days, Roger really misses the close association with both players and coaches. In high school you have a big responsibility in that you have a big also. PROVO Last week Brigham Young University was the site of the annual BCI basketball tournament which features the top high school players in the nation. Teams from New York, California, Oregon and Utah to name a few, were involved in the week-lon- g affair. BELIEVE ME if there are better players this next year in high school then the college scouts should get going and sign as many of them as possible. Speaking of those college people the stands were full of them all week, watching in hopes of fulfilling their nepds for the next four seasons. Last year for example some 19 players who played in the event last summer and who have just completed their high school careers, have signed with big name schools. UCLA picked up a trio in Kenny Fields, Darran Day and Greg Pruitt, Iona also picked up three in Gary Springer, Steve Burrt and Mike Moses. UTAH WAS able to capture the services of Angelo Robin- son. Others are heading to Kentucky, Notre Dame and LSU to name some. The Birmingham, Ala. squad ended up winning the event and why not they have two of the top rated guards in the entire nation on that team. Dennis Whatley and Gerald Crosby are regarded by many scouting people the top two players. Kansas City came into the tournament with 2 Grey Dreihling who has the college people knocking at his door constantly. 7-- RIVERSIDE CHURCH of New York, who placed second in the tournament, was loaded with talent, and the scouts know it. They had two quick guards, a big bulky center and drowned last week while attempting to swim across a small lake to a peninsula in Farmington Canyon. MR. CHAVERS was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts by a companion to revive him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and a frantic bicycle ride down the canyon by the victims son seeking help. A youth, who was not identified except to be a family friend of the victim, pulled the man from the water after the victim began having difficulty as he swam across the lake. Burton, Chris Mullin and 3 Curtis Moore from the Riverside team, but as one observer noted, There were some players who could change the lights in the Marriott Center without a ladder. It was a great tournament and fun to watch the best high school players in the nation under one roof. 6-- Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeos may compete in this Davis County Junior Rodeo, Noel Evans, chairman said, tb 237-758- rr Is Your Car Clean? THE YOUTH told investigating officers that he attempted to revive the man while the victims son took the bicycle off the pickup truck and rode down the mountain to Bountiful, 15 miles away, for help. The tragedy occurred in an area north of Francis Peak where there are three popular small lakes. Davis County Paramedics and the Life Flight Helicopter from LDS Hospital jumped out of the gym. Names like Damen Glover, Ricky Andre Hawkins are already household names to college scouts. The team from Utah, the state one, finished fourth overall which is the highest finish ever for a Utah club. Several high school coaches, umpire or referree in other sports, it isn't uncommon for a basketball coach from one school to umpire a baseball game at a rival school. These guys are always being counted on as bias, but are they really? THIS PAST week I had a chance to sit down and talk to him about life in the college ranks and what he missed about not being in the high school scene again. Of course Roger was at the tournament looking over the talent available for BYU in the future. We look for" several things when watching these guys. First of all can he shoot and make baskets. Then we look at his mental toughness, is he aggressive and play hard. The third aspect is his emotions on the floor and then finally more and more we look for foot speed and those, quick feet. BOTH HE AND I agreed there were several players in the event which passed high on all counts. Coach Reid also feels the Utah team can play with anyone.
