MRS. BARLOW gave a quick demonstration of her new radar-rangIm learning an entirely new way of cooking with this," she said. A microwave oven, which does in fact, require the user to learn new methods of cooking and handling food is also a lot of fun as well as a great time-savfor todays busy woman. e. I REMEMBER my first encounter with the microwave. Several year ago when the oven first hit the market, a dear friend, Jean Allred, called me down to her home to play show and tell with her brand new microwave oven. In utter amazement 1 sampled the most delicious, freshtasting doughnut. It had somehow been transformed from a relic into this tasty day-ol- d treat. How did it do that? I exclaimed, expecting a long and scientific explanation from my friend. With mock seriousness, Jean replied, Its magic. BEING THE gullible sort, I still believe her, and think it's magic every time I see one in action. But as Ora Barlow and lots of other busy ladies, working outside and inside the home will tell you, a microwave oven is nice to have. A COUPLE of Mrs. Barlows favorite microwave recipes are included in this weeks column. One, a moist meatloaf, is easily prepared, and served with the tomato sauce recipe, it is tasty enough I do a lot of for company. she said, so entertaining, some of my recipes have Good food has always been a prime interest in Ora Barlows life. She is shown here with a meat loaf made in her new radar range. already been sampled and tried by ladies in the area. Food and its preparation have been an integral part of her life, Mrs. Barlow insists. Somehow over the years this active lady found time to work with her husband Wilmer in the familys business, Barlow Furniture store. The couple have five children, one of whom, James, now owns the business. I keep thinking about retiring," she said, but thats as far as it gets. said. They are so much tier and better for you. How does one work at so many jobs and still find time to enjoy cooking? Im a morning person, she said. I like to get up early and do some baking or in the warmer months, yard work. DOING ONE'S work early also conserves electricity and energy," she'said. I have become very conscious of ways to conserve our natural re- sources recently. When she isnt working in the store or concocting a delightful meal, Mrs. Barlow enjoys reading and decorating. She has taken several courses in decorating and a few years ago had the opportunity to practice what she learned on the couples new home. SHE ALSO takes time out to enjoy her 20 (plus two on the way) grandchildren. While most of the recipes she uses are not of own invention, she says, she likes to combine and change recipes to suit her and her familys own tastes. Next week we will include two salad dressing recipes which may be made ahead and stored for several I weeks in the refrigerator. never buy salad dressing since I started making my own, she beans and cheese cake.
