Show I WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL. NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY 25. 1981 Woods Gross Finished Year By DAVE WIGHAM - WOODS CROSS One would probably have to have some compassion for the Woods Cross basketball program. Afterall if a couple of shots would have gone in here and there, or maybe a couple of other shots wouldnt have gone in, then the Wildcats would be entering the state playoffs. HOWEVER, THE Cats finished out a frustrating season last week with a loss to the West club that will go to the tournament as the third place club from this region. The Cats had an up and down season all year. They started out winning their first five preseason games and getting the attention of everyone. Then they hit hard times but they still were considered one of the three top clubs in he league entering region play. IN THEIR first outing the Cats were ambushed by South and this served as a sign of things to come. This was one of those games the Cats were in until the final shot. With ten seconds to go the game was tied and the Cats had the ball. South came up with a steal and the winning basket and the Cats were shocked in the opener. Maybe they didn't fully recover from that first loss for awhile but when the dust had settled they had lost to both Bountiful and Viewmont by identical 1 scores. In both these games they were in the game the entire way only to lose in the final moments. 48-4- 6 55-5- THEN WITH a 3 region mark the Cats regrouped and made a great run at some folks. First they knocked off powerful Highland in easy fashion by 14 points, then they nipped West by a single point on the Panther floor and finally they avenged the South loss with a 9 win over the convincing Cubs. The West win was only the second loss by the Panthers on their home floor in region action. So entering the second battle with Bountiful the Cats were right back in the picture. 0-- 62-4- However, bad luck struck again as the Braves hit a shot at the buzzer to hand the Cats a two point setback. By DAVE WIGHAM - BOUNTIFUL This was supposed to be a reloading year for the Braves basketball program. Afterall. Mike Hall lost his top nine players from last years club that was the first Bountiful team to go to the state event in some seven years. AS IF THAT loss wasnt hard enough to swallow the Viewmont team downed Woods Cross by a single point the following game. The Cats had the ball with about six seconds remaining in the game but they failed to convert on their final shot. Highland, one of the hottest clubs around, then came into town and ran away from the Cats and finally the West crew playing inspired ball, took the final battle of the season aw ay from Woods Cross last Friday. settled the Braves earn the right to meet the fourth place team from Region Four for the final state tournament berth. Ben Lomond and Bear River play on Tuesday, the winner plays Davis on Wednesday then Bountiful gets the loser of the Wednesday game on Friday. That pleases Mike Hall in one aspect. "We get to rest while they battle each other, plus we'll get to see them play while they haven't had much opportunity to scout us." EVEN THOUGH the Braves only placed fourth in their league the thing that has opposing coaches buzzing is their youth. "Do you realize the Cats made was being Sports placed in Region Five which top to bottom is the toughest basketball region around. Look at some of the clubs Quiz going to the state meet from other regions and chances are these Cats could beat most of them. Christiansen and Steve Gruenewald all played well for the Cats and will be missed next season. Clay played his best games against South while Dale and Steve played well against Bountiful and Viewmont. The bad news, of course, is that the Darts lost last week to Ogden and thus didnt get any piece of the region title. The good news, though, is that they placed third in league and are n activiinvolved in ties. KAYSVILLE-I- t's post-seaso- FOR SOME reason this year the administrators of this region decided to go with a region tournament to determine the teams in the state event. Ogden and Box Elder tied for the title but since the Tigers beat them twice in league play the Tigers will enter state as the number one team and the Bees as number two. Davis was third in league play and will await the winner of the game between fourth place Ben Lomond and the fifth place Bear River. Those two clubs will meet at Box Elder on Tuesday. The loser is out of the picture. The winner w ill play Davis on Wednesday. THE WINNER of the Wednesday game involving Davis will advance into the state tournament as the third GYMNASTS Debbie Hayes. Holman. Coach is SPECIAL Olympics will be held Feb. 27 and 28 atBYUin Provo. Handicapped students from all over the state will be participating in the swimming, basketball and gymnastics. The Monte Vista School students of Farmington have been preparing for some time for the events. Mrs. Holman, an experienced gymnast, has been successful in teaching the girls some quite complicated routines. Brent Mangus has been working with the youngsters in the swimftiing and basketball. THE MONTE Vista stuwill stay overnight, sleeping at host families dents homes. The families pick up the students on Friday evening from the campus and return them for their events on Saturday morning. This helps to promote understanding and lasting friendships between 103.60. Class II Top 10 results: Musgrove, first, E, 32.75; Snell, second, Saltos, 32.65; Cooper, third, Saltos, 32.20; Green, fourth, Saltos, 32.00; Ahone, fifth, E, 31.75; Pennich, Sixth, Sp, 31.65: Fowers, seventh. One would suppose the Darts dont care which club wins on Tuesday since they split with both of them in league play. However, the game they lost to Ben Lomond was the first of region play and without the services of junior Brian Taylor who is their leading point getter. The second time around they handled the Scots. BEAR RIVER slowed things down in Kaysville with the Darts winning despite scoring less than 30 points on the night. Up north, though, the Bears ran with the local lads and came away big winners in what had to be the worse showing for the Darts in region play. If the truth were known the Darts will probably be pulling for Bear River to win the playoff game since they match up better, size wise, with the Bears. THE DARTS have hit hard times lately as far as winning games goes, but consider they lost their final two games of league play by four points to the two clubs that won the title. Box Elder nipped them in state semifinals by Skyline. the handicapped and the Provo families, kj Who The girls BOUNTIFUL basketball season is winding down and the local gals are doing very w ell in their respective regions. UP NORTH Layton and o Clearfield are currently in their region, Davis is fighting for fourth place and a state playoff berth in their league and Viewmont along with Woods Cross are fighting for the title in their league. Layton not only has one of the top teams in their region but word has it the Lancers are the odds on favorites to win the state crow n. Currently coach Tom Perkins has his club sitting on top of Region One with Heading up the Lancer attack this season is April Hatch, Pebbles Hare, Koryn Wiese and Elyse Smith, all of whom are scoring in the double figures for each outing with Hatch leading the bunch with a 16.0 average. Big Richard Johnson will return to the middle and Bruce Bishop, who saw some action this year, will be back at a forward spot. Again one has to feel a little bit of sympathy to this club. They deserved to be in the state tournament and with a way, they would have made it. Bountiful avoided any chance of Woods Cross getting in the state picture with a 76-- 2 win over South last Friday. It wasn't easy though as the Cubs played great ball in the first half and built up a big 15 point lead. Taking a lesson from their previous game, in which they came back to nip West, the Braves fought buck. In the third period the Braves outscored South 25-- to take command of the game. 6 NOW THAT all the dust has TO SHOW the frustration of the season consider the fact that Woods Cross lost five ball games by a grand total of 13 points. Bountiful beat them twice by a total of six points, Viewmont twice by a grant total of five points, and South beat them by two. The Cats did show some great talent during the season and its a shame they wont get to show their stuff in front of the state tournament crowds. Probably the biggest mistake KEVLN NITZELL was the most consistent scorer for the year in region play with a 16.4 average. Senior guard Wes Johnson finished a fine year with a 9.6 average while junior Richard Johnson finished with a 9.8 average. Seniors Tom Clay, Dale how many of those guys will be back next year?" noted one coach in the league. "Bell. Brown. Weight. Smith. Izatt and a group of giant sophomores. They'll be good next year." Coach Hall wants the youngsters to get a taste of the state event this year. LISA BALANTYNE, Karen Stott, Paula Johnson, Lynette Bradford and Shauna Lemon are carrying on the tradition of winning basketball games at Viewmont. Woods Cross is still near the top despite loosing a lot of players to graduation with Gerri Jardine. Patti Weight, Marin Hansen and Christi Jenke leading the way. The championship will be decided next Tuesday when the Vikings travel to Woods Cross. THE 4A gals will hold their state tournament March 7 with the games being played at West High. The 3A event will begin March 9 and run through the 14th with games at either Timpview or Provo. "Oh. I'm only shooting at I missed last year." the birds 3 THERE REALLY wasn't that much difference in the region between fourth place and , first. Consider these facts. Viewmont won the league and the Braves battled them dow n to the wire in both their meet- ing although the Vikes won both of them. Highland was second and they had to go into overtime to beat Bountiful West was third and they split with the Braves. Junior Danny Bell has turned into one of the best big men around the area. He works hard under the boards to get open and once he gets his hands on the ball he is tough to stop. He's scoring in the 20 point per game average. SENIOR TERRY Ferrell has played well in league play for the Braves and his outside shooting has taken some of the heat off Bell inside. Terry has been one big reason the Braves n are involved in action. Mike Woodbury has been a giant on the boards for the Braves as has Alan Meldrum. these two have battled bigger people for rebounds all season and more than held their own. The youngsters have played extremely well especially on the guard line. Juniors. Todd Smith and Lex Brown, along with Sophomore Standout Blake Izatt. have been another big reason for the teams success. Izatt has come on strong in recent weeks and shows no lack of confidence when it comes to driving to the bucket. Smith and Brown are both excellent outside shooters and can turn a game around. post-seaso- AT THE first of the year few felt the Braves would be around for the state picture, but here they are. Mike Hall and his staff has to be credited with a fine job this year along with the players. Bountiful will be well rested for their playoff game on Friday and will get into the state tournament for the second straight year. COUNTY LEADING SCORERS ; , ; |
