Show i WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, AUGUST 27, 1981 By KEITH DUNCAN all the way by Secrist, the junior. Coach Ward Sawley Home has stood out in preseason drills, not only in his passing and running but blocking as well. That always comes in handy with the double wing the Darts throw at their opponents. wouldnt mind at all if there were no questions heading into the football squad's first outing of the season. But wishful thinking like that can only put a lot of extra slashes in the loss column so hell put up with those few question marks. THEY ARE LED in the most part by Jason Watkins, perhaps one of the premier running backs in the state. Watkins will be tough to contain no matter where he plays or who he goes against. Getting the nod to help stop Watkins will be a Dart defense that will get better as each game passes. JIM HILL has one defensive end spot anchored down while Craig Wagstaff returns from a knee injury to take over the other side. Watkins will have his hands full with Cary Blood and Robert Steed at the defensive tackle slots and if he gets through them hell have to tangle with a pair of solid linebackers in Kirk Storey and Troy Meacham. Chris Mackey could also see some playing time at a defensive backer spot. 100-met- 6-- End Of An Era! He may be just a little boy at heart, buy you cant amuse him with lollipops and marbles. Gosport. Let them know that we really think they should be playing football instead of holding out for more money. When it comes contract time they can fight for all they can get, but once they put their name on the dotted line they should be man enough to live up to that committment. Decision Expected On Library Director FARMINGTON Whether Davis County Library Director Jeanne Layton will receive a merit raise or not will be decided during an executive session of the library board this morning. THAT WAS the word, at least, as of Tuesday afternoon, when a second executive session to discuss the issue was announced. The first was held Monday about 11 a.m. after the regular monthly board meeting. Tell the players if they have a valid contract and are not showing up for workouts and games, like many of the players are doing, then they should fine them. Hit them where it counts, in the wallet. A fine example these sports heros are setting for the kids. Try to explain to your ten y ear old w hy John Jefferson of San Diego isn't play mg. although, he has a valid contract with them. THE WAY things are going, why even sign a contract? It seems to me they dont mean a lot to the players anyway. Then too, the players want us little old fans to believe they are playing the game for the love of the sport. I couldnt do this unless I loved the game," is a common phrase among players. Come on you guys do you really think the fans are dumb enough to buv that? IM REALLY getting upset listening to these guys talk about how underpaid they are. They should get my, or your paycheck once in awhile then maybe they would be more appreciative of their own. Then to, maybe the television people shouldn't dwell on the subject so much. Sure they have a HERE ARE some of these guy s that all of a sudden feel they should be making more money than the contract calls for. To me if their name is on the dotted line then what bone do they have to pick? I mean really, us fans have taken enought from these prima donnas. They think just because they can run with a football, or catch the darn thing, they should be making a million dollars a year instead of 1 responsibility to the fans to inform them of why players are there but they should really tell it like it is. Just once why don't they say. "he's not here because he feels he needs more money than his legal contract calls for." half-a-milli- Drew Olson and Trent THIS IS year number three for Sawley as a headcoach at Davis. He and his teams havent known what a losing season is like and dont bet in 81 theyll be finding out any sooner. Two seasons ago he led Davis to a 4 record and the state playoffs and last year enjoyed his finest year to record, a glossy 2 mark and another trip to the coveted state isnt quite so distant," con- tinued the head coach. and we at Davis like the fact the travel to opposing schools a sudden decided that a guy didn't play up to his ability one year so they called him in and informed him that they wont let him play this year without a new contract. Give him less money. Boy, would these guys get upset. But on the other hand they expect the owners to jump and renegotiate a new contract with them at the drop of a button. A contract is a contract. If a player signs for over four years then he should be held to that. The other owners should stand by the team and not even talk to the player who wants a new contract. n WATCHED several NFL games on the old tube now and not one of them has gone by back positon.
