Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, DECEMBER 10. 1981 By KEITH DUNCAN CLEARFIELD- -If opposcenters around the state plan on pushing Kyle Moos-man- n of Clearfield around, they might just try thinking twice about it. ing THE FACT is that Moos-man- n didnt play football, he isnt built like Darryl Dawkins and at first appearance doesn't look like a rough and brutal guy, but... Just ask Bountifuls Richie Weight or perhaps Greg Housekeeper of Woods Cross if they respect Kyle. These two are probably the start of a long list of prep centers who will take a few bumps from Moosmann. I FEEL Im doing pretty good, said Moosmann, But weve still got a long season ahead. I could be one of the shor test centers in our region (Region One), but that motivates me more than discourages me. When I go against a taller opponent it helps me to do better, said Moosmann. BUT DESPITE being only Kyle does weigh in at 195 64, lbs. And he uses all those pounds every Friday right to gain a little respect from taller players. I dont like being pushed around by players. I try to use my weight to do my job, he said. AS A senior with the varsity now, Kyle says he is still growing. He claims he has grown at least two inches and gained 15 pounds over his junior year. Moosmann likes to think that the Falcons are in midseason form and of course credits much of their preparedness to their coach, Craig Hansen. HE WORKS with us all year long and all the time stresses defense. I like it best when an opposing coach makes a comment that they like to be ready when Clearfield comes to town. That adds a bit of pride to our program," said the Falcon center. Moosmann voiced the feelings of his teammates in saying they couldn't wait for league action to start. field High, he wasnt trembling like some sophomores do. I turn and shoot and says it is almost automatic every time. knew I wanted to make the Football never was one of Moosmanns favorites. He played one day in a city recreation program and never came sophomore basketball team ROY W'ILL be our toughest test maybe, not because of their size and talent but because of the rivlary between our two teams, said Moosmann. The Falcons were able to knock off the Royals twice last year and were fairly successful in summer competition against the much taller and highly touted Roy team. and they seemed to give me confidence in all I did. When I did make the team I had every intention of playing on the varsity squad someday. Now Im here I want to make the best of it, said the Clearfield senior. ONE OF Moosmanns biggest thrills last year took place in when he jumped into a varsity game against American Fork and promptly tossed in 13 points in a quarters worth of action. Needless to say that got me a little excited about the future, he said. Kyle still isnt satisfied with his shooting and has intentions on improving as the season grows older. WHEN MOOSMANN first walked into the halls of Clear HE LIKES it best when he gets the lob inside. Then he can back to the sport. I JUST like basketball. Some of the coaches didnt think it was a good idea to concentrate on just one sport, but I think things will work out, he said. Besides basketball, Moosmann has a talented hand in art. He loves taking time to sketch scenes of the outdoors. Some of his pieces are on display in an art case at Clearfield High. EVER SINCE I was little I have enjoyed drawing things. I might go into the field of art in college and wouldnt mind playing either, a little he said. basketball Keith Williams Puts Some Spark In Layton Lancer Basketball By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON Keith Williams! Intoducing BUT DONT turn on the lights too bright or make a big deal when the curtains open. Mr. Williams has every desire to be one amongst us and not the standout in the crowd. For the most part Keith's wish will probably be granted him. But as long as he continues to lead Layton basketball to victories,? few of us will have to make a little fuss over him. KEITH AND his family moved to Hill AFB last fall as his stepfather, Robert Evans, was given a transfer through the military. They came from San Fernando, a heavily populated city just 28 miles north of Los Angeles, Calif. Now, after a few months at Layton High and having earned a starting position on the basketball squad, the question is whether the talented 6'2 junior is happy about the move? I COULDNT be happier. said Keith, The kids here have been great, both those on the team and those in the school. In more ways than one its been like a rebirth in life." Williams was explicit in explaining the difference of lifes tyles at Layton and what took place at the school he left behind in California. I can finally be myself, he said, "There isnt any restriction on what I can and cannot say. against Viewmont in which the Lancers beat the Vikings, basketball fans in the area woke up to the fact of just how good BACK THERE if you are said Coach Moon, program, The other kids have accepted him well and the thing I like most is that he is so coachable. black then you must act black. If you are white then you must act white. In order to belong you had to belong to a group but here everyone is open and friendly, said Williams. Relaxation! Williams said he finally knows what the word means. Despite the fact he is working harder than ever to achieve good grades and helping Doug Moon win a few more basketball games, his feelings are a lot more settled than what they were a year ago. IN PLAYING the swing man position for Layton, Keith is honest in saying he really hasn't got after it, but desite that has averaged 19 points a game in the Lancer's first three outings. "At first I was real hesitant about basketball, even though the guys were real friendly and had encouraged me to come out and play. I didn't want to be the superstar and be in the limelight," he said. If it had to come then Keith wanted it to take place gradually which is something he still hopes for. AFTER A 28 point outburst Williams could be to the Layton team. He has worked hard in our KEITH IS a smart kid and is well mannered. In talking to him I can tell he had some problems in California. But he has had every intention of improving himself when he came to Utah, said the veteran Layton coach. Moon also has noticed Williams frustrations at times. I realize Keith was playing with some first-rat- e players at home and probably realized a big difference when he got here. But he has been patient and has worked as hard as anyone, Moon said. IN L.A. Keith stated that if you werent a superstar on the court, you were a nobody. He may have been developing into a superstar but preferred to call himself an average player. The competition is stiff there. It isnt easy at all to make the starting five. My sophomore year was pretty good. I took the Most Improved Player award and the has also been a blessing. At his old high school there were only six white students among a Mexican population and the rest black. It was crowded there. People are getting tired of all the drug problems and are turning to sports and especially basketball because its inside, he said. Tenth Grade MVP award for the city, Williams recalled. THE LAYTON transfer said all the recognition and trophies were given out to boost egos for young players future years. But the most improved award wasnt for nothing. I really did come a long ways. Even this past summer I worked hard at basketball, he said. Williams likes the swing man position and says he wouldnt mind playing a little point guard too, but realizes the Lancers have someone more talented at that slot. Clearfields Kyle Moosmann has become a pretty significant part in the Clearfield march toward defending their Region One basketball title. Besides basketball he also enjoys his art where he spends time sketching scenes from the outdoors. AMERICAS LUMBER STORE WILLIAMS CREDITS Moon for teaching him the mental game of basketball. Back in L.A. it was reported to W Tit RlflM flrv Quantum To Limit Chck store be a very physical game. Practices there ran for five hours, with or without the coach. But here we seem to get more done in an intense two hour practice. Its a lot more mental game here than it was back there, said the Lancer eager. Im looking forward to the rest of the year and even next year with the hopes of having a great team, concluded Williams. MY POSITION is the hustle position. Its my job to find an open place on the court so other guy can find me with a pass. All Ive got to do then is to pop it in, said the junior Lancer. Williams came to Layton four weeks before the first term was complete. He didn't attend school at first, wanting mostly to adjust to the atmosphere. I was real nervous at first because I didn't think I could make any friends. I'm pretty happy the way things have turned out, he said. Friday Basketball Layton at Davis 7:30 HIS ORGINAL plans were to attend Clearfield High, but after talking to some immediate contacts he decided on Layton. At San Fernando High, it seemed all the emphasis was on athletics. This was the Ben Lomand at Clearfield 7:30 school that such greats as Charles White and Kevin had graduated from. All the praise went to heroics on the field or court, not in the classroom, Williams said. Hot Shot THEREFORE his grades Winners Named dipped and it was common to have C's and D's. But before the end of that school year Keith decided to turn it around and with his decision came better marks. At Layton he teamed with a good counselor and his marks have been As and Bs. He hasn't been hounded by drug pushers like he used to be, but has been free and open since the first day he arrived.
