Show WEEKLY NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH REFLEX-DA- VIS DAVIS i r. I LEADER, DECEMBER 10, 1981 Paris Final Four Create Excitement Dickson after the match was completed. It was a total difference. By KEITH DUNCAN It was KAYSVILLE very plain and simple, Davis High just ran out of wrestlers in their attempt to thwart a solid and well coached Box Elder wrestling team. FRODSHAM ROLLS DESPITE THE loss, you would have thought the Darts had posted a victory the way things went in the final 15 minutes. Being down 38-- 0 brought back memories of last years 60-- 0 loss to the Bees. Jim Dick2 sons group were not looking like they wanted it that much and the fact Box Elder was loaded with talent in the lighter weights didn't help things either. 81-8- Referee Gary Hansen slams his hand to the mat after Daviss Bruce Frodsham pins his Box Elder opponent in a match that turned the entire match completely around. By KEITH DUNCAN MADE the comWhen Robbie took state, it was the greatest moment in wrestling for me. Ironically Rob is to wrestle the same Brighton opponent who he beat in the state championship, this week in a duel meet against the Bengals. DONNY ment, - LAYTON Robbie Zamora can recall every second of the unforgettable moments leading to the state championship he captured last year as a 112 pound wrestler for Layton High. EVERY TIME I think about it I get a lump in my throat. I wish there were someway that I could encourage every wrestler to work hard so he could have that kind of experience, said the Layton senior. Even Robbies little brother, Donny, can hardly forget the achievement made by his brother. Donny is Laytons 98 pounder this year and like his older brother was undefeated going into this weeks action. WITH 40 seconds left in the match I knew I had to turn him, said Robbie as he recalled last years title match. I got him in a double arm bar and turned him for two points. That tied the match with only 50 seconds remaining. Robbie later took his opponent down again and rode his Brighton foe the final ten seconds to victory. IT WAS an experience you explain. Ive never felt cant joy like I did that night. My brother, sisters and my parents were all there and they held on to me with joy, said Zamora. So far this season, both Zamoras are undefeated and have their goals set for region and state titles. Their coach, Mike Hansen, says both of them are working hard and pushing themselves much better in practice. MY TOUGHEST opponent will be (Steve) Ulibarri from Clearfield, said Donny, Thats if he goes down to 98. The next toughest will be the kid from Roy, who I have beaten before. For Robbie, who has moved up to 1 19 this year, he says it is I a whole new ballgame. know there are plenty of guys out there that are after me, but I dont let it bother me. er room and I just wish every I TRY to get my mind thinking about the fullfillment I get from this sport and not to worry about everyone else," said Robbie. "Who knows what will happen? says Hansen, Wrestling is a funny sport. However I do know that Robbie does a lot of things in wrestling that come natural to him. He has good balan.e and is aggressive. There are very few people who can go from one thing to another and continually keep their opponent in trouble," said Coach Hansen. HANSEN said Zamora usually doesn't commit the same mistake twice and was sure the losses Robbie had at the first of last season only made him a better wrestler in the end. Of Donny, Hansen said, There is a lot of wrestling pride in that family and a lot of it has rubbed off on Donny. As a brother to Rob, they arc pretty close and they like to work with each other. AS A team Robbie knows this year won't be like last where he and his teammates finished second in state. "We are a young team but a team that knows how to battle in the third round," said Robbie. IT WAS Duane Martensen who motivated Robbie to wrestle and of course Robbie who encouraged Donny to start. Duane was a good guy on and off the mat. He knows I appreciate him for getting me started," said Robbie. Rob agrees that wrestling may have come natural to him and that Donny has had to work for everything hes got. TVE TRIED to teach him (Donny) all I could but sometimes there is a lot of bickering, friendly bickering at that, said the older brother. "Sometimes it gets to me," said Donny, But Rob knows that I appreciate all the help he gives wrestler really knew how much dedication it really takes to be good. "At the dinner table we push the food away when we know weve had enough. Grades, weve got to have good grades in order to wrestle. Then most of us have what it takes to come after school and push ourselves to do a good job in practice. IN WRESTLING its a must. And without a team and a committed coach, the sport wouldnt exist, said Robbie. Donny expressed his feelings too, saying, "Either you make it happen or you dont. As a wrestler out on the mat with someone else, youve got no one to blame for your success or a mistake except yourself, said Donny. THATS when the Darts Bruce Frodsham stepped on the mat. Probably the best way to describe his trip on the mat is that he literally ran. BUT The excitement he was showing was more than the en- tire team had shown all evening. FRODSHAM DIDNT waste any time in dominating his opponent as he pinned him in 15 seconds. The Box Elder coach was stunned, Dickson was ecstatic and the roof of the Sam Morgan fieldhouse about blew off. He changed the entire personality of the meet, said it WITH THE score 38-was now Troy Meachams turn to show his stuff. Meacham wasnt an awesome wrestling speciman last year but has set some goals to do some pretty good stuff this year. Meacham wasn't as sensational as Frodsham in attacking his Box Elder opponent but that isnt his style either. But there was something that he and Bruce had in common and that was a lot of heart. Meacham got in position to pin his opponent last in the first round and stuck the shoulders to the mat. THE DART fans simply went wild with the second pin. To someone who didn't know much about wrestling they probably had thoughts the Darts really had a chance of pulling this one out. Next on the mat was the match up between 185 pounders with Robert Steed representing the Davis squad. Steed on the year before stood that match and his competition across the way wasn't all that bad. STEED DIDNT get a pin as fast as Frodsham or Meacham, but he did get it. It came midway through the final period and when it happened the Davis fans and their team cele brated the victory like theyd won a state championship. "Thats what wrestling is all about, said Dickson, "Once the momentum turned around for us, we started controlling our own destiny." THE FINAL matchup came between Cary Blood of Davis and a strong bodied senior from Box Elder. Dickson described the senior from Box Elder as one of the stronger heavyweights Blood would meet all season. The two big men went the first two rounds without scoring a point on each other. As they went after each other in the deciding period. Dickson urged the official to stop the Box Elder man from stalling. Nothing much was done about it according to Dickson and it became increasingly interesting after the Box Elder man scored a single point on an escape. BUT BLOOD wasnt about to let the stalling tactics get him down. He topped his opponent in the final minute and managed to work him over for the only take dow n of the match. Blood stayed atop and rode the last few seconds to victory. Through the week the Darts were able to defeat Murray as a a team, but lost to Cyprus and Box Elder to close the week out.
