Members of the mile relay team have been the heart of the Layton effort this season. Barker has been the star in the hurdle races and though he didnt place in those events last week, it was his blazing effort in the relay that will be remembered. Kearl has thrown the javelin all year and after winning the Region One title the week before, he went on to place very high in the state meet. Laytons Most Pleasant Surprise But the biggest and most pleasant surprise for the Lancers this year has to be the Cooper brothers, who came out for track for the first time in their lives. Mike is the senior and Myron the junior. Together they gave Layton High something to smile about in the spring sport. Coach Russ Jones continually called them the most coachable kids Ive ever had. And it was Thursday and Friday at the meet that they showed off for the final time this year. Besides helping the mile relay team to a state championship they both have their individual events. Mike ended up taking third in the behind Lex Brown of Bountiful and Dave Evans of Hillcrest. He came back a while later to grab a fifth place in the 4-- A 400-mete- rs 200-meter- s. Call it what you would like, nervousness, anxiety or just trying to hold a best kept secret, but he entered Fridays events a tired man, mentally. They were just as powerful as ever last Friday in taking the state championship. The race came down to Hillcrest and Clearfield with the Falcons ahead in team points at that that point. The championship Coach Flint had dreamed about for years was right in his hands but got doused when Hillcrests mile team crossed the finish line two seconds earlier than his Faisons. No one expected the race for the title to be so hotly contested. Most of the Clearfield team would be happy to settle for second.
