Show f WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 27, 1982 No Trumpets Blared, But Made Big Celts itoton Phillips 4 y & y.f Keith Duncan Bulletin Sports CLEARFIELD The man behind the scenes, the kind of guy who never quite gets the recognition due him but always performs brilliantly, is usually the kind of guy that youd like defending you if you were in a foxhole and the enemy all around. Its guys like Clearfields Jimmy Phillips that fit that mold. Though he doesnt look like an athlete, standing 8 and weighing 150 pounds at the most, Phillips had just as much to do with the success the Falcons enjoyed in track this past spring as anyone on the team. Phillips, known for his speed on the track, was definitely the utility man in Clearfields march toward a third straight region title and another second place finish in state. hearr as big as ten other students. I have a lot of respect for him. The mile relay is Phillis favorite event. He ran the second leg right behind Wright. When Brian finished the first lap and during his handoff to Jimmy, he would say, Go get um. He said that everytime we handed off and it really got me going, said Phillips. Jimmy set a goal at the beginning of the season to earn a medal in every big meet of the year but he struckout in the final three, despite taking second places in all those The main reason the respect is there is because Jimmy was always a positive example to the rest of the kids. His attitude was unbelievable and he never qonm-plaineHe just isnt the kind of kid that gets caught up in the recognition thing, but at the same time went out every week and performed Coach asked me through the season if Id do whatever events would earn us the most points. It didnt matter to me, said Phillips. Shortly after their talk, Phillips was pulled from the 100 meters and was put in the 400 meters to prep up for d. 5-- Soon he was getting the kinks worked out of his runs in the 400 meter relay and mile relay, two events the Falcons placed second in region in. Later the 400 meter team took second in state while the mile relay settled for a third in state. I think most of the kids are really happy the way things turned out this past year, said Phillips; It would have been nice to win a state championship but taking another region title was great itself. on the indoor Phillips had a tremendous circuit and at one point was beating his good friend and dash. teammate, Brian Wright, in the Even though I was beating Brian in the beginning I knew he would come along. Brian always gets stronger as the season gets longer, it was great to see him win the 100 meters in region, said Jimmy. muimm a The man behind the scenes, Jimmy Phillips, gave up individual stardom to register more team points in relay events. Results of the event are as follows: V 60-ya- rd Junior High Girls second. " , pre-seas- r The Davis School District track meet for junior high students was held May 12. Central Davis girls team took first place in the district and Central Davis boys track team came in s The time I felt the most pressure was in the state meet when we had to win the mile relay in order to take state. We gave it our best effort (they recorded their fastest time of the year), but it wasnt quite good enough as Hillcrest was just a few yards ahead of (Jared) Martin in the end, he said! Besides track, Jimmy isnt a bad musician. He gave up music however to run track. In the Clearfield High band he was the first trumpet but had to drop from band because of time conflictions. If he couldnt be in band, then hed try debate. Thats exactly most of the season even though he developed time conflicts there too. As Coach Flint said later, Sometimes its harder to replace a utility guy like Jimmy than to find a first place performer. We wiil miss him. the relays. The Clearfield senior, who will graduate in a few days gave up the limelight he could have received by performing individually in the 100 meters or 400 meter dash, to run in two Clearfield relays which in essense would mean more team points towards the championships the Falcons were seeking. Every year we have a utility man. Last year it was Jeff Neiderhouser and this year it was Jimmy. Jimmy was as much a contributer to our success as anyone on the team, even though he didnt receive all the recognition he could have, said John Flint, his coach. Phillips came off with an an injury during his sophomore year but developed over the next two as one of the key figures in the track program. You have to have respect for a guy like Jimmy, said Flint, He isnt very big athletically, but he has a t meets. vs v' sh 1714 No. Main, Layton Just South of the New i VJe have Lures, Unes, Res, Boots, Waders, and all kinds of tackle accessories for your SHOT SELECTOR Oasis BAIT BOX Water Gremlin Jumbo Spirt Shot Selector V V fishing pleasure. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than 5 percent of all American high school students. TODD, WHO attends Sunset Jr. High, was nominated for this national award by Gloria Comiskey, a foreign language teacher of French at the school. Todd will appear in the U.S. Achievement Academy official yearbook, published nationally. Todd is the son of Paul and Connie Jonas and the grandson of Betty and John Mintun of Layton, and Evan and Lona Jonks of Clearfield. RODS 2 PC.
