But it wont en-,- r dorse a proposed law manda- ting their use. 3 That was the verdict after "last weeks meeting when " Health Director Dr. Enrico j - Leopardi asked d. for endorse-,- T ment of the proposal similar to one enacted in Tennessee where reportedly theres been a 75 percent reduction in in- -' r ) 'juries. THE DEPARTMENT has been providing infant seats to . area families for about a year I - - on a minimal rental and fee posit basis with 185 seats de- - currently, Dr. " Leopardi said, noting revenue Collected will enable purchase of 25 more. , w He said the department would like to purchase seats for larger infants, up to the age of 5, if the county commission can fork out the funding, but County Com. Chairman Ernest Eberhard, who sits on the health board replied, We have to educate people to get their seats on their own. Its impossible for us to raise funds. EVERYBODY wants to slap the general fund (for money). This idea Uncle or "Cousin Joe can fund, its come to an end. We just cant do it. Board Member Melvin Green said of purchasing the larger car seats, Youre talking about lending out for 3 years, then another child (in the family will be ready to use it.) You get into an investment. 2-- DR. LEOPARDI indicated car accidents are the fourth largest cause of life loss, with a high number of deaths under the age of four. Death rates of 5 percent in that age group could be prevented if car seats were used. It really hammers home the point with the accidents that 50 percent of all fatalities in accidents the leading cause is of death in children ages accidents, notably vehicular, Dr. Leopardi continued. 40-4- J ITS VERY obvious these children need a law and may be analagous to the immunization law we have, he added, referring to the countys requirement youngsters have proof of immunization or proper defer-rbefore enrolling in school. el Board Member Dr. Jan Freeman questioned need for the law. Im not so sure we can vote another (law) to try to force common sense on individuals.
