KiJJ on the other hand stands nearly 6--0 and weighs 160. I used to be 140 until I got on Coach Cary weightlighting program. I may not have all the muscle but I feel much stronger than before," said KiJJ. "TOM ISNT physicallly big but he wont be denied anything which is a great characteristic of his, said I iansen, I dont think he or Matt have shown anything yet. "I guess the reason Im here today is because 1 had brothers pounding on me w hen I was little. They always pushed me. There has been something in this family that says a Kidd has to always bust his butt and be the best he can be, said Tom. Toms older brother Jim played with the Lancers the year Layton took I HO 170 long $ the Lancer' Tom KiJJ and Matt Austad dont look back, they may be the Marling ballcarrier for quite omc time. BECAUSE Jl'ST behind Layton's starting duo is a pack of hungry players, guys like Paul Herald, Robert Warnke, Myron Cooper and Butch Burke. "There's no time to goof around in prac-licesaid Kidd, "Because the minute you think you're the only one, is when a speedster like Cooper could take it away from you." ," CARY HANSEN so far likes what he sees in Tom and Matt and as long as they get the job done, they'll continue to get the starting call to carry the pigskin. "Tom has the same heart and desire that his brothers who played here had. With Tom running and Matt blocking weve got a pretty good set up there," said Hansen. And Austad is more than a blocker. He has had two or three nice runs for us so far," said Hansen. Even though we dont have as much speed with him, he still gets the job done." "IT WAS EVERYONES desire that they could run the ball like Tom could," said Matt about his little league playing days. He was my hero from the very beginning because I was his lineman then and got to open up the holes and block for him. Then part way through his sophomore season, Austad was asked to play running back after Russ Jones and Hansen conferred about it. "It was my chance to be like Tom even though I still enjoyed the hard hitting that came from my middle linebacker position. "I GUESS I got pretty excited about running the ball because I love to run and score pdints. But Kidd wasn't always a runningback. Until he reached the 155 pound league, he played quarterback but has been carrying the ball ever since. One of his greatest moments came when he scored five touchdowns against Highland during a sophomore game. We came to play that day, it was just there. The line played their best ever because the holes were huge," Kidd reported. AUSTAD STANDS the height he reached in seventh grade and hasn't grown an inch since. During off season he weighed in at 5-- 9, state. "EVER SINCE I was a little guy, I had dreams of playing for Layton. Coach Gory (Hansen) was an idol of my olJer brother's and today I think the same way about him, said Kidd. Austad felt the same way, "I couldn't wait for the day I could play for Layton and Coach Hansen. "Even though weve lost our first two, I know weve got more of a winning spirit than what was here last year, said Austad, "When we lost to Bountiful the first week it blew me' away. We've got what it takes to go to state. LAST YEAR we had some good senior and good juniors but they never really united. This time weve all come together. We've just got to find the right formula and start winning," said Kidd. "The thing that bothered me so much about last year is that people looked forward to playing us because they assumed we were easy prey. We'd like to change that so people are afraid of playing us, like the old days, said Austad. BESIDES athletics, Matt enjoys drama where he is just as good. He'll play the leading role in the schools musical play called Grease" this year. Last year he received straight superiors in state competition and looks forward to the same kind of competition this year. Kidd will keep on trucking in athletics. From football he moves to basketball then on to track and field. Mike Barnett (47) of Viewmont throw himself at Tom Kidd of Layton to stop the Lancer runner. Turnovers Decide F ate Davo Wlgham Clipper Sports' ..... BOUNTIFUL Once again the Viewmont offense took advantage of turnovers by their opponents as for the second straight week the Vikings came away big winners this time tak ing Layton 22-- THREE OF the Vikings four scores came as a direct result of their defense giving them the ball via either a fumble or an interception. That same Vike defense has only given up one touchdown in their first two outings. ; For the Lancers it was their second loss in as many attempts although they received high credits from their victors. They hit a lot har- der than they did last year, and a lot harder than Clearfield did last week noted Vike running back Steve Caputo. , VIEWMONT got things going their way early in the game when quarterback Doug Lee found tightend Kevin Smith down the middle for a 53 yard gain. At the end of the play the Lancers caused Smith to cough up the football but an alert Brent Green recovered for the Vikings on the Layton 30 yard line. Following a couple of Caputo runs the Viewmont offense put up the first points of the night with Scott Hubbard bulling over from three yards away. Joey Smith added the extra point and the Vikes led 0 with just oyer seven minutes still left in the first period. The score stayed that way until the second period. Doug Scovil picked off a Brad Merrill pass and returned it ten yards. Lee then found Smith alone again this time for 14 yards and a first down on the Viking 36 yard line. On first down Kurt Mathews, who drew praise from the Layton coaches, out jumped a couple of Layton defenders to make a great catch good for a 30 yard gain and another first down on the Layton 30 yard line. ; ; : ; 7-- Matt Austad and Tom Kidd always looked forward to the day theyd play in a Lancer uniform. This year its a reality. Layton gets on the board Layton got on the board first in the second half when the Vikings snapped the ball over their punters head and out of the end zone for a safety. That was the only score of the third stanza but the Vikes put up nine more in the final quarter. The new addition to the LanLAYTON cer football staff happens to be Mike Gardner, a former Spanish Fork High School athletic star who for the past three years led the basketball program at nearby Centerville Junior High School. letterman at GARDNER WAS a four-spo- rt hon- he earned where Fork Spanish ors as a wide receiver in football. During the winter he was a captain for the basketball squad and in the spring time he went to state in events with the track team. THE VIKES drove inside the Layton ten but then Lee had a pass intercepted but they got the ball right back on the second play with Shawn Salmon recovering a fumble. Still the Lancer defense held on three downs and the Vikes sent in Smith who kicked a 19 yard field goal. The final score was in the wanning moments of the game. Lowell Knighton recovered another Lancer fumble and junior fullback Shon Wilson rambled over from nine yards out. The point after was no good but the Vikes had a 22-- 2 win. Layton s Mike Gardner of that helped to earn him a football-trac- k scholarship to Snow College where in his All . 9-- ; 'j 0. GARDNER WENT on a mission for the LDS Church later that year. His first stop on the coaching tour was at Centerville where for two years he struggled with that program, Than last season the Centerville team went undefeated 0 and won the county champion-fou- r ship. : VIEWMONT then crossed up the Lancer defense and sent Hubbard up the middle on a draw play. Before the Layton club could bring him down the big fullback had rambled to the seven. From there it was Caputo left for the score. Smith missed the kick but the Vikes still led 13-- Gardner Appointed To Layton Football Staff I WENT after the job almost immediately, said Gardner, Ive always been pretty excited about getting into a high school program. Getting into Laytons program should be a great opportunity for me. The Lancers have had some exceptional success athletic wise and I hope I can contri- bute to future success. While Mikes brother Steve coaches baseball at Snow College, the formers main emphasis has been with football and basketball. Presently Mike is assisting Hansen with the football program and this winter will help Doug Moon in the basket- ball program. ; : ; Laytons Tom Kidd made yardage until he was knocked out with a concussion. THE LANCERS werent without heroes though as Troy Moon played well on defense while Brad Merrill continued to impress every- one with his passing and Kenny Heath caught everything thrown in his direction. Layton suffered a setback in the first half when their best running back Tom Kidd had to leave the game with a concussion, he just couldnt remember much noted one Layton coach. ; :: : : : : '. : I j I |
