Department ol Natural Resource and Energy, in conjunction v. ith the Uuh State Division of Exposition is sponsoring a Jordan River How and Run event. THIS canoe kayak and running contest i ill be held Saturday , Sept. 1 at 9 a m. as a iy2 Slate I air activity. A ribbon-cuttin- g 1 ceremony officially opening the new Jordan River State hirkway-Utu- h State Fair Park w ill be featured a part of the Row and Run event. The Row and Run contest will begin on the Jordan River State Park t ay at 1700 South 1200 West adjacent to the Wjldwave swimming pool. Teams will be composed of two members in the canoe divisions and one member in the kayak division. CONTEST divisions include n canoe, open kayak, mixed canoe, two-ma- (male-femal- and women' canoe teams. Participants must furnish their own canoes or kayaks. Teams m n t wishing la rent canoes from the Jordan River State Park- way must make reservations at the parkway office, 1545 West WOO North, Salt Lake City, 535-4- Before beginning the rowing portion of the contest, one member of the team w ill be required to complete a one and one-hamile run along a lf course which will be set up in the vicinity of 1700 South 1200 West. Team will row their canoes or kayak three miles to the finish line ut the Stale Fairgrounds. fee for each team will be $4. Registration on the day of the contest will be $5. Team member will receive fair passes, prize and refreshments. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., in- terested persons may er at the Utah Stale Division of Parks and Recreation office, 1636 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, or at the site of the contest. For additional information call or 533-4533-601- 2 LAYTON Mrs. Oma accepted a special award for historic restoration of a commercial building last Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, at the annual awards luncheon of the Utah State Historical Society. The award was presented to Mrs. Wilcox by Therron Luke, representing the Utah Division of History. It was given in recognition of the l'j year restoration project Mrs. Wilcox and the Layton First National Bank organization undertook in renovating, remodeling and restoring the Layton Farmers Union Bldg. THIS HISTORICAL Society honor is the latest in an impressive list of awards the Farmer Union restoration project has received. of the historic restoration award was the Utah Holiday magazine. Other awards received by the First National Bank organization included ons from the Fatemal Order of Eagles, a Utah Heritage Foundation award, and a Layton Chamber of Commerce award. The restoration project was written up in the Utah Architect magazine. THE FARMERS Union was the only commercial building restoration project recognized by the Utah Historical Socie- ty. Although, architectural drawings and preliminary work took many months, the actual work lasted about I'i years. The cost-pesquare foot including landscaping was under $75.
