Show JANUARY 12, 1983 Davis Wrestling Foir A WMIe Aiftter ViMiiff wm JDDL By KEITH DUNCAN 'Journal Sports - KAYSVILLE After a week like the Davis High wrestlers had, its okay in Jim Dickson's eyes to smile for a while. THE DAVIS High coach had plenty to smile about last week as the Darts stung Viewmont in a dual meet on Thursday at home then 1 came away from Bear River on the weekend with a championship trophy, reminiscent of their victory over seven other schools at the annual Bear River Invitational. The Darts, who have as good a chance as anyone now to win the Region Four dual meet championship, dealt the Vikings a frustrating defeat. 41-2- ON SATURDAY in Tremonton, Dicksons club placed eleven of twelve wrestlers for 178 'A points and the team championship of the Bear River Invitational. Bear River finished second with 148, Payson was third with 109 and Logan was fourth with 102. Two other schools were in attendance, they being Bonneville and Highland. Davis came away from the tournament with four indi 4-- A By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports Like Clearfields Scott Tennis put it, The rivalry was already there, now we have a trophy. THERE HASNT been any love lost when Layton and Clearfield get together for a sporting event, with wrestling of course being no exception. It never fails from year to year, these kids would just as soon kiss their own sisters than lose to each other on the wrestling mat. So with that kind of intense feeling existing between each other, Tennis and Laytons veteran Mike Hansen decided on a new twist last year. Why not have a traveling trophy? WELL, NOW its a reality. J.P.s Texaco of Clearfield, with John Petroff as owner, has offered to buy and sponsor a traveling trophy that will rest in the trophy case of the school that wins the annual dual meet each year. And it just happens to be that the dual meet for 1983 between these two schools takes place this Thursday in Clearfield. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 p.m. Tennis most notable comments prior to the match were, Were the underdogs in this one, but were going to scrap and fight. HANSEN commented from other side, saying, Its always nice to beat Clearfield. Its been a good rivalry. In last weeks dual meet action, Layton barely escaped Sky View with a 5 victory while Clearfield and Weber each won six matches, but more pins helped the Warriors to a victory over the Falcons. 31-2- AT SKY VIEW, Donny Zamora was leading but after being cautioned three or four times for stalling, he was disqualified. Sky View thus claiming a victory. Then came another blow as Rodney Rieatjes fell by a decision and Layton found themselves down 0 and having lost two matches they were supposed to win. The Lancers got into the winning groove through the following four matches as Eric Hyde, Mike Petroff, Brian Bailey and Rich Gallegoes each claimed victories. 10-- 1 six-poi- 9-- this one with wins at 138 and 145. It took a couple of pins by Tracy Jones and Blaine Tracy to silence Sky View again. That was too much for the Bobcats to come back from but they did claim two more victories, beating Mark Wilson by a decision and Shawn Monroe by a pin. THEYRE A tough team, admitted Hansen, Id have to pick them right now to win the region. At Weber, one big surprise was Wayne Esteps pin of Shawn Kendell at 98. That sets the stage for Esteps confrontation against Laytons Zamora on Thursday evening. There may be enough explosion in this match to supply the city with electricity for a week. CLEARFIELDS other v ictors last Thursday included Shad Ragan at 1 12, Scott Miya at 134, Tom Wood at 145, Mike Sorenson at 155 and at 169 where Mike Evans got a pin. a battle at 98, - Besides the another featured match this Thursday will pit Ragan against Hyde.
