WHEN THE FINAL results of the third annual Davis District Track and Field Cham- pionships were finally tabulated and the familiar name of Clearfield wasnt at the top, it seemed puzzling and a little out of place. For two consecutive years the Falcons have dominated this event that brings together all six of the county high schools. But it was View-mowho posed as a team for first place honors in this seasons track event. nt JOHN FLINT, the mastermind behind Clearfields traditionally rich program, bowed graciously to the Vikings who tallied 171 points to his teams 140. Ive been picking Viewmont as a super state contender from the very first of the year. It was no surprise to me that they did as well as they did and what is even more scary is the fact they might even get better. They did a real good job. Though weather conditions 6-- 4, werent as bright Thursday as they were Wednesday, the 3rd Annual Davis District Track and Field Championships carried right through the end.' has been working overtime to learn the art of arching his back. The junior basketball star learned all he could from Jon Tisler last season, and expects to jump 7 or 8 before this season is over. Moore, also a junior, beat out his senior friends to win the pole vault. The 12-- 6 jump was the winning height which beat both Todd Blair and Lane Fishbum, who took second and third respectively. 6-- 6-- ONE OF THE days exuberant races was the Laytons Myron Cooper edged out Bubba Conley of Clearfield. I 400 meters where , thought I had him beat, said Conley, But when I heard the crowd rise up like they did, I knew I was in trouble. Said Hint about the race, Bubba will be back. He needs a little more strength. He got a great lead, but will have to keep it. Conleys 50.60 clocking in the trials was as fast as Cooper ran it in the championships. RICKY SMITH, the Falcons utility man, finished third in the 400 meters, third in the 100 meters, was a leg of the championship mile relay and also ran a leg of the medley relay. Smith had his best times ever last week, in the 100 (11:34) and the 400 (51.3). Smith is just a junior. Dirk Barlow made a supermans surge to win the 800 meters but was narrowly edged out by Davis Del Espinosa. Barlow settled for second and a good time of 2:01:32. Barlow has run a 2:00 minute flat 800 in indoors. I havent got much kick, so its important that I get a big lead, said Barlow. DEAN GARRETT, besides running a leg of the title mile-rela- y team, has emerged as one of Clearfields top hurdlers. Garrett finished third in the 110 meters and second in the 330 Ints. I was leading the 300 race until the very end, but saw glory before the finish line. Ill get it yet, said the Clearfield senior. HE CONTINUED to say, We found out as a team what we need to do after today. My primary job is to help us win the region meet and take em one at a time till the state meet comes. Other top finishes for the Falcons included Bill Wilcoxs fourth place endings in both the 1600 and 3200 meters: Dean Foulger a fifth in the long jump and a fourth in the 200 meters; Gary Brietwiser a sixth in the javelin; Steve Labato a fifth in the discus; and a third place finish by the medlay relay team. IM DISAPPOINTED we lost it, but we had some guys that came through for us that could get better themselves and make us a better challenge the next time we meet. I sincerely feel that this might be something to get us going some more. There are some genuine battlers on this team and they havent quit yet, in fact theyre far from it. WELL LOOK forward to meeting them said (Viewmont) in the next invitational, Flint. Clearfield captured five first place medals, including a pair by J.C. VonCollin. J.C.s performances were so impressive in the discus and shot put, that the district coaches voted him the meets outstanding performer. VONCOLLIN, the defending state champion in the shot, won that event with a throw of 54-more than four feet ahead of the nearest 4, competitor. VonCollin broke the district meet record in the discus with a throw of 160-2'nearly four feet longer than Rich Ipaktchians old mark of 156 4V4. VonCollin had a throw of 170 feet which landed just four feet out of bounds. 2, VONCOLLIN, WHO is headed to BYU on a football scholarship this fall, said nothing comes better to him than athletics. What is track for it you cant go out each week and do better than you did the week before. Records are made to be broken. I give a lot of the credit for my success to Coach Flint, probably the best track coach in the state. There isnt a night he wont stay until six or seven oclock to help one of us, said VonCollin. THE FALCONS had solid depth in the shot as Kim Thurgood finished third with a toss of 48-103- i. Cory Walker narrowly missed placing. Other first place finishers were Hal Schofield in the high jump ), James Moore in the pole vault (12-6- ) and the mile relay quartet of Jared Martin, Bubba Conley, Ricky Smith and Dean Garrett. To Come For Darts By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON Better things are yet to come from Davis High track and field, all the way from Del Espinosa to the kids who Coach Mike Shaw still hasnt recruited yet. THE DARTS had some bright spots and then werent quite so bright in last weeks third annual Davis District Meet held at Layton High. The meet was a good experience for the kids, said Shaw in review of the two-da- y event. Though we had some mental lapses in some areas, overall it was a very good experience for us. some that OVERALL THE Darts finished fourth in the team title chse by taking up 78 points. Viewmont, the team Davis will have to contend with in Region Four this spring, piled up 171 points to run away with the championship that Clearfield High had won for two prvious years. We had some legitimate chances in some areas, and no sour grapes, but we just didnt get the job done, said Shaw, (Del) Espinosa lost two races, the 1600 and 3200 meters, by a total of a second. It cost him the MPV of a honors Im sure. Del is as good a runner in the state as there is. He and Jace Brewer (Hillcrest) will emerge as the kids to beat come state meet time. 16-1- (6-2- SCHOFIELD, whose highest jump has been ESPINOSA, who did beat out Clearfields Dirk Barlow in the 800 meters for a first place medal, was beaten by Viewmonts Mike Allen in the two longer runs. Ill read Allen a little better the next time we race, said Espi nosa. Del became mentally tired with track a few, weeks ago, which wasn't hard to do with the;: kind of indoor circuit he ran and the steady training demands he put on himself. I re lented because of it, stated Espinosa, I got-intsome light workouts till I felt I was ready-again- . Im back at full strength now. SOME OF THE bright spots for the Darts included Morgan Nelson who took second in the high jump at the mile relay team which; took second behind Clearfield, Erik Thompson whose 141 7'A throw took third in the discus,; Mike Hayward who took third in the long jump-wit- h a leap of 20 feet and one-ha- lf inch, Jeff! Ohwiler who took fourth in the javelin anf sixth in the discus, Brian Bacon who took; fourth in the 400 meters, John Jones who took fifth in the pole vault, Ken Hirschi who took; sixth in the Tom Green who got sixth: in the long jump and Troy Johnson who cap-- : tured sixth in the mile run. Another impressive showing was that of sophomore Kenny Roi bins who took fourth in the 800 meters. ::5 One thing that will hurt us this year, is oun weakness in the sprints, said Shaw, Our. best sprinter is a sophomore, Kelly Ryujin.: Without experience and depth there, well get hurt. But we do have sophomores and juniors in that area that are getting better all the time.; 6-- 2, two-mil- e, DON SNOWBALLS injury the day before the meet also hurt Davis. Snowball is Davis answer to the pole vault but he came off the mat a day before the meet and bruised his tailbone. Don had been jumping at least 13 feet before the injury. Hell be missed for a few weeks. |
