Show JANUARY 18, 1984 Continued from pg. 1 Laytons BrimhaU Classic Dual Ends Looks To Clearfield even, we'll have to score some more because they've been scoring more points than any team weve played. At the same time, I think our defense has been pretty fired up and should do something to slow them down, said Brimhall. I THOUGHT Box Elders guardline was the quickest weve met yet, and because Im not the quickest in the world, they gave us fits on the baseline. But well work on what we missed in the Box Elder game and hopefully be ready for Clearfield on Friday. Playing Clearfield, especially in football, is something Ive always looked forward to. I think theyre the better team right now, but if they overlook us just a little bit, we might beat em just like we did Bonneville, Brimhall continued to say. BRIMHALL will probably be matched against either Hal Schofield or Phil Peterson of Clearfield, both of which are quicker than he. Ill just have to work my butt of against them, said Dave, Ill have to out think em to a spot on the floor and keep a hand in their face all the time. In 29-2- 9 By KEITH Deadlock one wanted to be a team winner in this one, Thursday nights dual was a haven for a wrestling fans delight. There were upsets and near upsets from the start to the finish. DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON field replied, . - Coach Scott Tennis of ClearMy kids beat Layton, but I tied em. TO OPEN the meet, Laytons Nicky Romero stunned Clearfield's Wayne Estep by pinning him in the second round. Then it was Clearfields Dusty McMullin getting by the stubborn Layton sophomore, Brett White-side- s. THOSE COMMENTS came in the aftermath of the 9 deadlock that Clearfield and Layton wrestled to in last weeks featured wrestling dual at Layton High. Tennis, midway through the dual that now has a traveling trophy going to the winning school each year, was nailed with a referees decision that cost his team t. It was the first time in Tennis 22 years in the sport that hed ever caused his team to give up a point. 29-2- Eric Hyde, hurt shoulder and all, took on Greg Johnson and found himself down 4 in the third period before getting Johnson in trouble and pinning him. AT THE TIME the point came off Clearit really seemed insignificant, mainly because Layton had built up a pretty good lead and seemed to have their eighth victory in a row over Clearfield all sewed up. But after Tom Wood, Mike Sorenson and Scott Ferrin had teamed together to get Clearfield back to within six points, it was very evident that the penalty point could be quite costly. And it was as junior Dennis Langford stepped on the mat next and wasted little time in pinning Laytons Rodney Ringler. That pin left the dual in a 9 tie and the future of the traveling trophys resting place still up in the fields total, When Its Close, Darts Will Tremble wasnt up to the fight that like the final score Mark Martinez (bottom) and Chuck Hanor (top) sort of position themselves 4 win. came out, deadlocked.Hanor hung on for an 8-- 8-- Falcon Wrestlers Win U. Then Mike Sorenson and Scott Ferrin pinned their Layton opponents in the first rounds and that set the stage for Langfords heroics in the closing minutes of the match. MIKE HANSEN of Layton commented, "To decide who will win the trophy will probably go down to who finishes best in region or something of that nature. The Darts were dow n by 14 points. 4127 with just one minute to play, but scored eight points to close the gap to 5 at half. A big reason for their galliant effort was the offensive punch of Sargeant who scored from everywhere on the court. The senior forward ended with 26 points. CLEARFIELD racked up 152 points, while Granger had 140 to finish second and Monticel-l- o with 99 took third place. Claiming the championship titles in the one-da- y event were Clearfields Merrill Johnson at 138, who won his championship bout, 21-- 0 over an opponent who was 13-- 2 to that point. Johnsons accomplishment was quite a feat in that he entered the meet unseeded and swept four seeded wrestlers to win the title. WHAT CAN you say, asked Tennis, Johnson is perhaps the hardest worker Ive been around. He really stepped on some toes and surprised some people last weekend. The other Clearfield champion was Tom Wood. "Tom and I will get together this week and go over some of his problem areas, but despite not wrestling like he is capable, he still came through to win the ... title, said Tennis. This week they will host East and on Jan. 26 they will finish up their dual meet schedule with a match at Highland. win over Viewmont on ThursThe day was revenge at its sweetest, after View-mon- g had pulled off a mild upset win over the Davis crew in the Brighton Tournament. SHAWN ROBINSON, Davis talented 112- pounder, said after the meet, We felt bad about our loss to Viewmont and simply wanted to make up for it last week. But can the Darts begin to feel like theyve got the region title in the bag? Jim Dickson doesnt like to think so. Viewmont, though they didnt beat us last Thursday, proved at Brighton they could. And even in spite of that, anything can happen in a region tournament. Last year we had a chance to put the thing away in the second round, but had a collapse. Even though we finally pulled it ofT, it wasn't all that easy. NO ONE has anything given to them and of course thats one thing we have preached here at Davis. Weve also stressed w ith the kids that there is just one month left. One month and no more wrestling. I think some of the kids want to make the best of it, he said. IN THE WIN over Viewmont, Davis lost at only four weights. Among those eight victories, there were some impressive wins. Sophomore Justin Julander pinned Shawn Gee to get things going right. Then after Derek Green had beaten Alan Ence, Shaw n Robinson completely whipped Shawn Moore. 22-- Scott Tennis Saturdays University of Utah Wrestling Meet, which was said Vikings In Dual, - placed ten wrestlers in last nt in Region THIS WEEK the Darts, now Four, play host to the Viewmont Vikings in a game Gardner calls, the pivitol game of the year. Were expecting ourselves to win the next couple of games, Viewmont at our place this Friday and then another one at Woods Cross next Tuesday. If we do, well climb right back into the thick of this thing. We dont like talk, ing about what might happen if we dont said Gardner. THE DARTS would have liked to have won both their games last week, and almost did had it not been for a long prayer that was thrown up against in the Highland game. The 69-6- 7 loss to the Rams was hard to take but the 7 win over Bountiful earlier in the week was nothing but sweet stuff. Against Bountiful we had a great second half in shooting and playing defense. It was all a coach could ask, said Gardner. The two teams were knotted at 18 a piece through the first 16 minutes but Davis execution in the latter quarters put the No. I victory in the win column for themselves. The Braves meanwhile, have yet to win a game in league play. THE DARTS proved Gardner right again, show. that his club isn't a one or two-ma- n Sometimes its Steve Sargent leading the way. other times its Ryan Smith, but against BounJeff Sampson who pumped in 18 tiful it was points including 8 for II shooting from the field. "Weve got real good balance and it shows, said Gardner. But against Highland the Darts were not as fortunate in the second half of the game as they were against Bountiful. Though Davis played hard and rugged for the entire game, they couldnt w in it going down the wire. THEY FOULED us and we missed a frecthrow and then Ill promise you. they hi from the comer, with oni one from second to beat us. We've been so close in so many games this year and for some reason were not coming through in the end. The luck isnt with us. the ball isn't dropping, turnovers here and there are preventing us from winning in the final minute. But the kiJs are playing hard enough and that's what is tough to lake. Take away two long shots and we might be -- WE AGREED as a team that Weber e appeared like they were coming off a winning streak." But after that superb coaching effort by the veteran Warrior coach, a 4 defeat could not console them.
