"I learned how to do this before I went blind. It is one thing I can still do." Jana states in a stoic way. Jana is blind. In October of 1982 she experienced a drastic weight loss and illness that put her in the hospital and left her with failing vision. Her weight dropped to 77 pounds. THE SICK spell and subsequent blindness were related to diabetes, a disease that afflicted Jana when she was only one and a half years old. She has lived on a diabetic diet her entire life. Insulin, administered by a needle, has combeen her panion. THE DISCOVERY that she was going blind was difficult to accept. "1 spent one summer lying in bed crying. Finally. I decided to get hold of myself. I have a life to live and things to accomplish." Jana says. With the support of her parents. Maryon and John Chesley. and encouragement from friends and neighbors. Jana traveled to Salt Lake to attend a special OPT school. This is an Orientation Training Program that the Murray B. Allen Blind Center offers to people. JANA FOUND out about the guide dog program through several blind friends. Sheldon Pantcr received a guide dog with the help of the Eagles Fraternal Organization. The relationship and bond Jana felt between Tammy and her guide dog Tahatha. convinced Jana that she could get much more from life if she had a dependable, canine guide and companion. She could continue with her schooling. She could live "on her own. FRANK Zamora, a representative from the local Fraternal Order of Eagles, contacted Jana and explained the guide dog program to her. The animals are purchased by the Eagles from the San Rafael Guide Dog School in orienCalifornia. A tation and schooling in San Rafael is pari of the guide dog program. If Jana met the requirements set up by the school and the Eagles, she could receive a guide dog. k JANA FILLED out the necessary papers, Tom Aimsworth from the San Rafael School interviewed Jana. She was tested on her attitude, her physical condi-- , lion, her mobility skills and the benefits a dog could be to her. JANA WAS loIJ she must improve her physical condition in order to qualify for a dog. She worked all summer to control her diabetes and establish a good nutrition program and an exercie program. f JEANETTE HANSON ' - I h r V. X A "- -r t - Consumer advisor lor Bernina.
