Raising the water level of the reservoir two feet a has involved quarter mile of D&RG-WRtrack north from Sterling and building a quarter mile of dike to keep the rising water from the new undermining roadbed. Raising the water level has also meant buying out the Braithwaite Ranch, a few miles southwest of Manti, from Carl Braithwaite, its owner, for an undisclosed amount. Ive spent a lot of my life on the ranch," Carl says. 'And water is still transforming the face of the valley, carving new lines in its countenance. Lately, water has told a railroad to move over, told a rancher to sell out, told homeowners theyd better thove their houses to new sites. Carl bought the farm from his father, Clint, more than 20 years ago. I've worked on the ranch since I was a kid, Carl recalls, tramping hay and milking cows, when I was little, and finally taking it over from Dad." The Gunnison Reservoir, which for location might better have been called the Sanpete Reservoir, had its beginnings in 1889 when the stockholders in the Gunnison Irrigation Co., which had filed on upstream water, decided to build a dam on the Sanpitch River, a couple of miles below Sterling, in order to store some of the high water that otherwise came down in a sudden flood. The site they chose for the dam was almost "ctlv the site on which R One reason for the hurt is because the ranch has been Braithwaite property for more years than Carl is old added to through the years, improved and developed. This is not to overlook the concern of those who walk, jog, hike, cycle, ski, swim, and sweat in the hope that such activity will lessen their chances of a heart attack. Most of us are convinced cardiovascular exercise in some form which elevates the pulse in a sustained fashion on a regular basis will reduce the risk of heart disease. Granted, we dont have all of the data needed for proof, but there is much more to it than improved quality of living for the present. There is now a considerable amount of population study data to support our position. the monkeys Our friends Even though animal studies are somewhat confusing, it is difficult to ignore recent research on our kinfolk, the monkeys. Dr. Dieter M. Kramsch, at Boston University Medical Center separated 27 Macque monkeys into three groups of nine and followed them for three years. One group ate a diet low in cholesterol and remained seden-terA second group was also seden-terbut ate a diet high in cholesterol. A third group ate a diet rich in y. y, cholesterol, but exercised on a treadmill for one hour three times a week at speeds equivalent to jogging for humans. Exercise paid off As you might expect, the exercised monkeys resting heart rates were much lower than the two sedentary groups. Only the sedentary monkeys had ECO abnormalities suggesting their hearts were not getting enough oxygen. The exercising monkeys, even though on high cholesterol diets, retained normal electrocardiogram readings. What it means The editorial accompanying the report in the New England Journal of Medicine said, Relevant observations 3 Vi made over years provided provocative and objective evidence that may support the protective value of periodic and regularly maintained moderate physical activity. One thing it does not necessarily mean is that diets high in cholesterol are safe as long as you exercise. We do not know how early in life exercise must be started retard to atherosclerosis. High cholesterol diets for longer periods than three years may be more lethal, even for the exerciser. Regardless of the preliminary aspects of the study, it should be a strong signal to all of us that exercise holds out a promise of more than a healthier life for the present. So keep exercising. 3-- Sanpete Taxi Service to close The Sanpete Taxi Service. owned and operated by Pete Galovan, Manti. will cease to do business afler April 21. 1982.
