Show The Sanpete County Messenger, April 29, 1982 BYU scientists developing , In developed countries, modern farming is a high low labor technology, intensive business. Huge agricultural experts estimate. The dream of harnessing technology to help these farmers may be a dream. just that But a group of Brigham Young University scientists has painstakingly developed a small-scal- e agricultural operation that could bring the benefits of current research to these farmers without imposing the burden of costly technology on them. It's designed to furnish food, a small cash income, and the satisfaction of providing for ones own. It can be adapted to any locale in the world, using crops and animals that fit in with the local climate, diet and marketing system. Were not trying to d stereo-equippe- harvesters, for example, reap the amber waves of grain rippling pff to the horizon. Put in some parts of the world, the average farmer is more likely to be someone scraping an existence for himself and his family from less than 10 acres of land, using many of the same methods that were prevalent at the time of Christ. If hes tacky, he may have an ox lfhelp him. .There are about a billion W these small-scal- e labor intensive farm operations the world, throughout . i LuGCiy orabop revolutionize a country with all of our fancy equipment that we have here in the U.S., explained Dr. Paul Johnston, a professor of animal science and one of the principals in developing the system. Were simply utilizing what they have, but helping them use it better. Dr. Laren R. Robison, associate dean of the universitys College of and AgriculBiological tural Sciences and prime mover of the project, pointed out that some 65 percent of the worlds farmers operate less than five hectares (a hectare is just under 2'j acres) of land; about 34 percent of them have less than one hectare of land to farm. Developers of the small-scal- e agricultural system had three primary objectives. "First, they aimed to produce rjloy rally A A902 ve Oven G a , Dcntlstcm (modi your UTTON FEATURES Meal-In-On- " e component in the system. Another important component is the cash crop. It could be raspberries, potatoes or cut flowers whatever would produce the most revenue and put money back into the Robison exsystem, If plained. you dont have a revenue-producin- g system, we don't feel that you've really done what needs to be done. We think the system to help the can be adapted to many countries, he added, but there is a need to test it now in some other area. The researchers would like to find a backer to offer a site and financial support for further tests, The systems really quite dynamic. There are so many opportunities for Johnston adjustments, commented. It has a lot of flexibility associated with it. In the United States, he farmnoted, small-scal- e ing is more or less a hobby, with the farmers belt-power- low-spee- produced locally and therefore provide manufacturing jobs. The design for such a machine would has been completed, Robison said, and the next step is to build an operational model. etuGiBB avoc 1 AliCUMINT f CMKE- S- Ute,571,l ! In order system function anywhere in the world, the BYU group is also working on development of a small, piece of equipment that would act as an ox for the farmer, but also convert to a d diesel tractor to pull a cart. It could be re meat the to and calories Second, they wanted to enhance the quality of the protein provided in the system with an animal meat, eggs, product milk, etc. Laying hens, rabbits or goats could be included in the system because theyre common throughout the world hens for eggs, goats for milk or meat, and rabbits for meat. Third, the BYU researchers wanted to design a system whose components would provide an adequate diet. Dr. John M. Hill, associate professor of food science and nutrition, set up standards for the nutritional intake that should be provided by the crops and animals in the system. We have a diversity of both animal and plant products that could meet these nutritional needs, -One yA as corn. There, researchers used four separate 2 plots to grow food crops for people, food crops for the animals and a cash crop, Johnston was in charge of the animal component, using laying hens, goats and rabbits. Robison said data from the experiment indicates a plot could support seven people in the temperate zones.
