To the Editor: time-payme- do not deny that there is a statewide need for correctional facilities but in my opinion such a facility would be a detriment to the town of Ephraim and surrounding communities for the following reasons: I 1. A prison type of facility brings with it a lot of undesirable people. Wives and girlfriends move close to the facility in order to make visiting more convenient. Friends of the inmates would come to Ephraim occasionally to visit, and many of these people would not have the standards we want in our community and welfare costs would increase and possibly prostitution, sexual assaults and drug traffic, as friends of the inmates see Snow College students and Ephraim as a lucrative market. It will certainly not make our streets safer for our children. 2. The state says they want educational opportunities for the inmates. I predict they will have them because the enrollment at Snow College will drop. Would you send your son or daughter to a college next door to a correctional facility or would you send them to a college where there is not one? My small insignificant survey of friends and relatives indicate that they would not send their son or daughter to Snow College, especially if there was any possibility of the facility letting inmates out to attend classes at any of the college class sites. If the enrollment dropped far enough the state might decide to use the entire college as a correctional facility. Ephraim could then become known as the Correctional Community" instead of an "Educational Community". Do these inmates need remedial classes or college classes, and do they deserve a free college education while you pay? Did they choose to break the law or were they coerced? 3. Everyone knows that every good Mormon family subscribes to the Ensign, the New Era, and The Friend. It's also a known fact that no one ever throws a copy away. That means that attics, garages, and closets are filling up more and more every year. As this volume (and weight) continues to grow to immense proportions, eventually the supporting earth is unable to hold up the load, and the continent begins to sink into the Pacific Ocean. There was this midget fortune teller who escaped from Jail. The headline in the local paper read Small Medium at Large." I predict that the western United States will go first because thats where the most Mormons are. This will be followed by the Samoan Islands, where there are also lots of Mormons. Of course, as the Church continues to increase its missionary efforts throughout the world, other trouble spots will develop until eventually the world may consist of all water with Ensigns floating around on the surface. Of course the Mormons and the Ensigns may not be totally responsible. I suspect that there are a fair sized number of closets filled with National Geographic and Reader's Digest magazines. Great American Smokeout .4' U y it American Cancer Society urges smokers to go a full 24 hours without cigarettes. This year Smokeout Day is Thursday, November 17. The serious side of quitting will also be addressed. The Surgeon General has labeled cigarette smoking the "chief avoidable cause of death in our society." Statistics bear this out. Smoking has been shown to be responsible for more than 75 of all lung cancer, the number one cancer killer of men. By the end of the 80s, lung cancer is expected to replace breast cancer as the number one cause of cancer deaths among women. Cigarette smoking has also been implicated in cancers of parts of the body other than the lungs, including the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas. About 55 million Americans still smoke. Eighty-fiv- e percent of smokers would like to quit, surveys show, and a great many have tried at t Ronald D.
