Show Mantl Massangar, Thursday, April 26, 1984 Ephraim Council Trivia Equal depravity? drainage project A decision to scale down the size of the second phase of the west side drainage project was reached by the Ephraim City Council at Wednesdays tegular meeting. According to Mayor Halbert Jensen the entire drainjine on 1st West will be scratched from the project. "The elimination of the 1st West line will save an estimated $66,000 from the cost' of the project, said Mayor Jensen. The Council also decided to eliminate the drainage pipe running West from 4th,Wfst in favor.of an open ditch. It is estimated that this action will cut $52,000 from the total cost of the project. According to the Mayor, the project will now be comprised of a drainaage line along 2nd West . between 1st South and 3rd North. A second line will run along 3rd North from 1st West to 4th West. At a point near 4th West and 3rd North, the line will empty into an open channel which will take the water on West, said Mayor Jensen. "The Council has really struggled ' with this decision, explained the Mayor. "We hope that this will be an effective compromise that will take care of the worst of the problem while allowing us to construct the project without additional funding, he said. A motion to accept the bid of Tony Siaperas Construction Company of Price, Utah for phase two of the project passed the Council unanimously. According to Mayor Jensen the second phase of the project will cost approximately $150,000. "We wont know the exact cost until the engineering company can look at the scaled down version of the project and provide those cost figures to us, stated Mayor Jensen. Reservoir control means you plan five or six months in advance of where you want to be," explained Carly Burton, UP&Ls Hydrologic Supervisor. At Electric Lake west of Huntington, Emery County, the company has been.; releasing water since December. The 30,000 acre foot reservoir should be only full by the time runoff begins in earnest, leaving 10,000 feet of capacity. (An acre foot is the amount Of water it would take to cover one acre one foot deep.) Burton said UP&L coordinates its "releases from Electric Lake with the Division of Wildlife Resources and the. U. Elsewhere in the UP&L system, , the company is drawing down the Naughton Reservoir to Its lowest ever. That reservoir, near Kemmer-er- , Wyo., should be down to 12,000 acre feet. That will leave about 30,000 acre feet of capacity to handle runoff. two-thir- . Let us hope that equality for women never means equal depravity. Utah Power and Light, Ephraim City and Manti City have therefore agreed to post a reward of $1,000 for the apprehension and conviction of anyone found shooting out insulators. Mayor Bessey noted that at the last Mayors and Commissioners meeting there had been some discussion in regard to the railroad returning to Sanpete, and said it was the considered opinion of those working on the matter that additional time should be allowed for the railroad to consider options in this area. Mayor Bessey indicated that there had been a number of citizens Contact him requesting work be done on the dugway up Manti Canyon, and the mayor requested that the city recorder place any available contractor or city equipment capable of doing the work on that dugway, to which the council agreed. Two-ho- parking The council approved a request from Zions Bank for the establishment of a two-hoparking area on the city street directly north of the bank and on the opposite side of the street on the south side of Manti Grocery. The council approved the designation of the two-hoparking zone on a temporary basis, noting if no problems develop, the arrangement will be made permanent. Mayor Bessey asked the council to carefully consider the problems of the perpetual care arrangements with the Manti City Cemetery, and asked the council to carefully review the recap information which had been provided by Sexton Ray Johnson. multi-facete- d Charles G. Fruit sprays ineffective on dormant fruit trees Don't waste money and effort and misuse pesticide by attempting to spray dormant fruit trees to control disease. That advice b given by Dr. Sherman V. Thomson, extension plant pathologist, Utah State University. Thomson said, Many of the products on the market in Utah for use as dormant sprays for disease control may be misleading the consumer. Most of the diseases Ibted on the labels do not occur in Utah. Therefore, control b not necessary. He cites as examples diseases such as peach leaf curl, brown rot, rust, scab, rose black spot and raspberry cane blight. They either do not occur or are extremely rare in Utah. Thomson acknowledged that you may get some control of powdery mildew of apples by applying a dormant spray of lime sulfur. Generally, however, thb spray b ineffective. The temperatures must be warm enough to volatilize 'the sulfur before it will provide control. Rarely do temperatures get warm enough for thb in Utah during the dormant season, Thomson noted. He also explained that the powdery mildew of apple overwinters inside the bud. Fungicides simply are not able to penetrate the buds and eradicate the infection. Spraying when foliage is developing and during the growing season b necessary to prevent sporulation and control the dbease. Contact the local county extension office for more information on control of disease in fruit trees. . mi, msimm finals Miss Laura Lee Meyers, 3 ' 8 daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lav Meyers of Manti has been se'ei. d as a finalist in the 13th Annual Miss Utah National Teen-Age- r Pageant to be held at the Salt Lake Sheraton ' Hotel, Salt Lake City on My 4 th, 5th and 6in, 1984.
