The Program was developed in Peotone, Illinois to help discover areas in which an individual student may need help in order to prevent failure in school. Principal Jim Petersen heard about the program and traveled to Illinois to learn first hand about it. Mrs. Olsen attended workshops on the program and then with Mr. Petersen's assistance, she established the program in her classroom. Mrs. Olsen said the unique aspect about this program is that it "allows the students to work without failure. Even though a student can't do certain tasks or perform certain skills, he will never feel he has failed its just something he hasn't learned to do yet. Before the child enters kindergarten he is screened by a committee of teachers using the Peotone this?), visual skills (what does he see?). How does he interpret this?), language skills (how does he express himself and understand the concepts of his environment?). Because each child grows at his own rate and these growth patterns limit when they can learn or master certain skills. This method of teaching enables Mrs. Olsen to teach the whole body because some students learn visual, some learn hearing, and some learn abstractly. The Early Prevention of School Failure" is geared to all aspects of these learning patterns. Parent volunteers make it possible to work with the children in small groups in areas where they need the help. The student will be introduced to approximately SO different skills during his kindergarten year and the goal is to have mastered all of the skills before entering first grade. If this goal is met, the student is considered to be prepared to settle into a school career. d Screening Test. The results of this screening enables Mrs. Olsen to focus her attentions on each child's individual needs.
