Smallor hoaditono mark hi wifos gravo. The hymn written by an impoverished English elder has been sung at every General Conference of the LDS Church since its original publication in 1863. The author of the words to this piece of sacred music was born in 1830. His father, John Fowler, was a native of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, who enlisted in the British army at 21 years of age. The elder Fowler was stationed in Ireland, where he met and married Bridget Niel. From Ireland, Fowlers regiment went to Australia, and it was there that his son was born. well-know- n At 3'i years of age William made the perilous trip by ship to the East Indies, where he lived with his family for the next five years. After that tour of duty, his father was discharged from the military and the family returned to Sheffield. When William was 11, his father died, and his mother died 3'j years after that, leaving the boy an orphan by the age of 15. Both of William's parents had been converted to the Wesleyan Methodist faith (his mother had been Roman Catholic, his father a Protestant). At the age of 18, William studied the principle's of the Wesleyan Methodist faith, but apparently was dissatisfied with some of the tenets. About this time, a friend took him to hear the Mormons speak at the Hall of Science on Rockingham Street. It was the winter of 1848. William delved into further study of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, and on July 29, 1849, he was baptized by Elder J. V. Long. He was ordained a priest on March 3, 1851, and following the practice of that time, labored as a missionary in the Deepcar Branch under Elder William Memmott. Fowler had worked as a cutler in a factory at Sheffield, but was discharged from his position when it was discovered that he had joined the LDS Church. His missionary diary speaks of the hardships, and trials of a persecution, of the Mormon church in missionary those early days in England. "Walked 21 miles today, rode 7, is a typical entry. On March 27, 1853, Fowler wrote, "Mob assembled and broke up afternoon meeting. In the evening we met at Brother Craigs house and had a good meeting. The The Temple, which was last June following several years spent carefully restoring and updating its facilities, utilizes the traditional live endowment ceremony, as opposed to the filmed presentation used in many newer temples. The Manti Temple was first dedicated in 1888. Public and private dedication ceremonies were held at that time, because some of the participants in the secret dedication services were wanted by federal officials on charges of practicing plural marriage. On May 26, 1963, the 75th anniversary of the Temple was observed. A four hour and 45 minute Solemn Assembly was held in the assembly room upstairs in the Temple, attended by all General Authorities of the Church and 1500 Priesthood leaders from the 26 Stakes which then comprised the Temple District. President David 0. McKay presided at the gathering and the Spoken Word was broadcast from the Manti Temple, accompanied by the Tabernacle Choir in Author of famous Mormon music is buried in Manti The author of the famous Mormon hymn, "WeThankThee, 0 God, For a Prophet", died in Manti in 1865 and is buried in the Manti City Cemetery. Clearly, television may be an improvement on some of the evening entertainments popular in the previous century. In spite of the hardships and his loss of a job because of his religion, Fowler married Ellen Bradshaw and somehow supported her and three children. He was a man and studied and gave instruction in music. He learned the Pitman system of shorthand and his diary records that on Sept. 9, 1853 he received an instruction book at the hands of Sir Isaac Pitman himself. d There is no evidence showing exactly when We Thank Thee, O was written, God, For a Prophet but President Joseph F. In preparing the site for restoration in the summer of 1980, a careful study was made of the builders masonry which showed that the pioneer builders had used an adobe mud containing red sand in laying up the exterior walls. The mud became the victim of wind and water over the years, until finally the only mortar of this type remaining was buried deep between the layers of stone. Peterson Masonry, Mayfield, completed the restoration of the exterior walls, striving to remain true to the original appearance and architecture. A soft mortar containing very little cement was used in the restoration. The mortar required special formulation to enable it to expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking the stone. Title to the Patten House is vested Gty.
