The local National Guard unit posted the colors, Wilbur Braithwaite offered the prayer and the music carried out the historic motif. Pauline Yardley played an organ rendition of Yankee Doodle Dandy, Lee Thurston read "That Ragged Old Flag, Bev Armstrong lead the Manti Stake Cub Scout chorus in a medley of American hymns and LuDon and BY BRUCE JENNINGS Resident and visitors alike agreed that in Manti the holiday did live up to its reputation it was indeed a glorious Fourth. At the Miss Fourth, of July Pageant Thursday night judges chose Jennifer Petersen, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Miss Fourth; Suzy Petersen, Frischknecht, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Frischknecht, first attendant, and RoAnne Purcell, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Purcell, second attendant. They won their tiaras in a field of contestants on the basis of appearance in evening gowns and short talks on patriotic themes. The pageant served as the first visit of many to the beautifully refurbished auditorium in the Manti City Building. And the building also provided the setting for several other Fourth events, including three displays. Renon Jones won in Alan Peterson sang "This Is My Country", and God Bless Amer- ica. Of course there were other traditional events: the American Legion breakfast, the flag pole ceremony, the games, the booths, the balloon sling, the watermelon contest, the movie in the auditorium, the fireworks, show, the dance. Those activities also tended to carry on the nostalgia theme, for instance the log rolling, the square dance exhibition and the movie, "Johnny Tremain," that lured a flock of children away from the park and back uptown to the auditorium. This Fourth was truly a variety pack," one former resident back home for the holiday, commented. I've never been home before for more activity, more excitement and more patriotism." "Ican't even begin to thank all the people who helped, including the city employees who pitched in with a lot of extra Elaine hours," Mortensen, Fourth chairman, said.
