Show f Mingr-Entrprls- I. r , Thuradoy, Dcmbr 1 1 , 1986 Pag 4 County ordered to reduce tax valuations BY BRUCE JENNINGS The good news for Sanpete County tax payers is that the Utah Tax Commission has ordered Sanpete County to reduce its property tax valuations by 13 percent. The bad news is that the 13 percent reduction will probably not result in any decrease in the amount that property owners will be asked to pay when the county sends out its tax notices next summer. That's because the taxing entities mainly the school districts, the county and the towns and cities will presumably raise their mill levies to make up for the reduction. In fact, the property owners could find their bills even higher. The tax commission ordered Sanpete, Duchesne and Rich counties Tlffaney Frost Kevin Christensen well know how the 13 percent reduction will affect different kinds of property, she said. Mrs. Howell doesnt think the valuation reduction, in the long run, will result in a decrease in the property tax. Thats because the taxing units will have to raise their levies to make up the difference, Mrs. Howell said. The Sanpete County Commission, for example, is considering a property tax hike of 9.7 percent. That proposal will be aired at a public hearing Monday morning at 10 in the courthouse. The county needs to reduce their valuations because studies conducted by the commission on the sales prices of property showed that market values had decreased in the three counties. Five other counties Emery, Garfield, Iron, Kane and San Juan have been ordered to increase their property values by amounts varying from 12 to 22 percent. As an example, a piece of property valued on this years assessment rolls at $63,640.00 an actual case would be valued next year, after the 13 percent is applied, at $55,366.80. Actually, however, Yvonne Howell the county assessor, said that the county doesnt know exactly how the reduction will be applied, since three kinds of property commercial, land are valued at different and homes for taxing purposes. rates will be several months before "It ranking students academically in this years eighth grade class who have attended Ephraim Middle School all Kevin Christensen Eighth-grader- s and Tiffaney Frost will present this .years annual Yule candles on .December 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium as part of the annual Candlelight Program.
