Show Mantl Messenger, Thursday, April 30, 1937 Large number of seniors plan college BY BRUCE JENNINGS A much higher percentage of South Sanpete School District high school seniors than the state average plan to go on to college next year. Ninety-on- e Manti and Gunnison Valley seniors responded to a survey conducted by the State Office of Education as to their post-hig- h school intentions and 82 of the 91, --or 90 percent, said they plan to continue their education. That compares with just over 80 percent of Utah seniors who expect to continue in school. As might be expected, Snow College is the first choice of 32 of the 82 who expect to be back in school next fall and is the second choice of another 16. Union, Manti percentage has been gradually creeping as more seniors realize that theyll need more than a high school diploma to compete in todays job market. In Utah the percentage was 64.25 10 years ago and five years ago it had risen to 70.06. The University of Utah is still the school of choice in the state, followed by Brigham Young University and Utah State University. But the r number heading for the schools is picking up, with Dixie the popular choice, followed by two schools with new names, Utah Valley Community College and Salt Lake Community College. The University of Utah and Brigham Young University are limiting enrollment and a cap has now been put on student numbers at Dixie. But Utah State and Weber, on the four year level, and Snow and College of Eastern Utah, on the two-yelevel, have places for more students. The actual number of seniors who will go on to college is decreasing, but a higher percentage of those graduating will be going on to college. That apparent contradiction has school people guessing on what to expect in the future. The South Sanpete students werent broken down between Gunnison and Manti high schools. Natural Gas Line Crews from Mountain Fuel Supply Company are now beginning to install natural gas lines throughout the city. It is the gas company's intention to complete this installation before summer so that visitors to Manti will not be inconvenienced during the peak tourist season. You can help the gas company complete its work by avoiding, where possible, traveling on streets where gas company employees are trenching and laying lines. Parking vehicles in driveways, off thoroughfares and out of borrow pits, will also save time and effort. The gas company crews are fast and efficient. Their line installation systems are rapid and do little surface disruption in most places. Your patience while they are laying the line will be appreciated. If you have questions during this construction, please phone the gas company representatives at 8968206, and not the city hall (except for emergencies). Thank you very much. W.A. Mickelson Manti City Recorder Up and Beautification projects. Spring is traditionally a time to make our homes look more beautiful and clean. We plant our flowers in the spring. We water and fertilize our lawns and in general try to make our homes as tidy and nice looking as we can. Last week was Arbor Day. In many states this is an important day. Arbor Day is the day set aside for the planting of trees. It comes on a different day in many states because of the difference in climate. Arbor Day started in the state of Nebraska in April 1872. Mr. J. Sterling Morton who started it was a newspaper publisher. He felt that it was his duty to help in the conservation efforts. He realized that trees would enrich the soil and help to conserve moisture This is done because the shade of the trees and the decomposition (rotting) of the leaves makes the soil able to absorb and keep more of the water. You can see how this works by getting some soil out of your garden. Add a little bit of grass and leaves to one sample and leave the other plain. Now add water. You will see that the foilage (grass and leaves) helps the water to stay in the soil. Here in Sanpete County water is an important resource it is one that we need to protect. We can do this by planting. Not just trees but grass and other plants as well. In the early 1900s Oklahoma and other states became what was know n as a dust bowl. The top soil just blew away. Part of the reason for this was that farmers did not have enough growing plants. As the rain would fall they would try to plow in the moisture. As it got hot and the land dried up the soil they had loosened blew away with the tremendous winds that the midwest has. If they had planted and let the foilage keep the moisture in the land they would not have had the problems. Land can wear out, the nutrients and minerals can be lost by overuse; that is why we fertilize our yards. Fanners rotate crops. That means they will plant corn one year and then 7 s two-yea- ERMA OLSEN It Is time for spring clean-up- . Lets make our homes and yards as beautiful as possible. Next to Snow, Utah State University is the first choice of 12 and the second choice of 15 South Sanpete seniors. Two indicated Brigham Young as their first choice and six as their second choice. Of the 82 who plan on attending college next year, 46 are boys and 36 are girls. More than half of them 48 in all have their sights on a bachelors degree. Sixteen will settle for a r vocational education degree. Only four of the 82 said they plan to for their post-hig- h go school training. Over the years South Sanpete seniors have opted for more education by a greater percentage than in the state as a whole. But for the state as a whole, the Pag the same field plant wheat or another crop the next time. This is because each crop has it's own unique set of nutritional needs. By rotating crops the land is able to replenish itself. That means that it can build up on the other nutrients that it is not using. I hope that all of you will help your parents to make your community beautiful by planting and caring for the plants you have in your home. If it were not for plants we would not have the oxygen that we need to breathe. We breathe oxygen and plants breathe carbon dioxide. When a plant uses the carbon dioxide in the air it gets rid of the oxygen. This makes the concentration (amount) of oxygen in the air higher. We breathe the air and get rid of the carbon dioxide that makes the carbon dioxide richer for the plants to use. In this way plants and people help each other. Plans are also part of everything we eat. Even meats and fish. The animals and fish have to have the vegetation (plants) to feed on. Can you think of anything that we eat or drink that does not have plants somewhere in the process? Next week we will be talking about some other ways that we can help with the beautification of our homes and easy-startin- in duiableToio mowers. g, Special sale prices for a limited time.
