Bill Thompson, Zoning Commission Chairman, said that besides the applicant, some 17 other Manti residents attended the meeting, and all were opposed to the change. Some reasons cited included infringement on residential owners nearby, parking problems, commercialization of the temple area, and other concerns. Mr. Johnson purchased the property, at the intersection of 4th North and Main, in 1985. He received general support from various parties, and proceeded to arrange financing for the motel, if he could get the zoning changed. The planning commission, of course, only makes the recommendations to the council. The Manti City Council will make the final decision on the change, in a special meeting Monday night, Nov. 19, 1990. Mr. Johnson said he was surprized at the vehemence of those who attended the zoning meeting. He said he was amazed at the objections people had. 1 have never been so exposed to such hatred before, and I was kind of overwhelmed. I didnt realize people were so opposed to motels. Johnson noted.
