This family event, sponsored by the Gunnison Valley Arts Council, invites all children and former children, to a concert of stories and tales -some familiar and some unfamiliar performed by June Miller, a professional storyteller. Ms. Miller will present her program called Kings, Queens, Witches and Wizards Thursday, February 21, 1991 e, Renaissance stories selected to entertain and instruct children, grandchildren and any grownup who was ever a child. Storyteller Miller is no Mother Goose, sitting on a stool and reading from a book with her face hidden behind a bonnet On the contrary, she performs her stories with all the animation and suspense you would expect from a professional actor and teacher, which she is. The evening performance is open to the public. Roger Nielson honored at So. Oregon University Roger Nielson, professor of chemistry at Southern Oregon State College, recently received two honors at the college, when he was awarded a $25,000 research grant by the Research Corporation of Tucson, Arizona and the student chemistry group he advises was deemed an outstanding chapter by the American Chemical Society. Nielson was also cited for his effort as faculty adviser of the Societys student chapter at SOSC. He will use the grant money to involve two or three undergraduates in the research of corrosion prevention. Grandchildren of Nila Kiesel win honors in school Roger, the son of Ethel Nielson and the late Max Nielson of Manti, graduated from Manti High School in 1975. He graduated from Snow College, the University of Utah and received his doctorate in chemistry at Washington State University. He worked with Dr. Murbach nained as a, Sterling .Scholar.at Orem High School. Rachel received the Business Education Award. She is the vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America at Orem High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. Last year she was recognized for a special contribution to the Business Department Rachel does Genealogical Data Entry. Her plans for the future are to attend BYU, then join her mothers business doing data entry. Still another granddaughter of Nila Kiesers is Rachel Larsons sister, Heather, who is attending LDS Business College in Salt Lake City on a scholarship. By so doing, she follows her mothers hosts speech contest MHS on a scholarship. 1st place in oratory, Jill Bateman, 3rd place in extemporaneous speaking; Tawnya Gardner, 2nd place in student congress and voted Superior Chairman; Amber Denton, 4th place in student congress. Coach Ben Galloway is the coach. Eagle recognition dinner set All Explorers, Varsity Scouts and Scouts who have earned their Eagle Award during 1990, and their parents, are invited and encouraged to attend. A special program will be presented. In the Sanpete District during 1990, 57 Eagle Awards were earned. The Snow College Associate of his works published in a national hardbound collection of Watercolor Paintings. Art enthusiasts can see Purcells work on page 50 of the first edition of SPLASH. The book, according to its editors, is a fabulous showcase of the very best in Contemporary American Watercolor. This first edition presents an outstanding body of work from 90 artists, all in over 150 photographs. ' most impressive the Maybe about having the painting part full-col- or published in SPLASH, and the most gratifying to Purcell is the fact that the editors of the book sought out his work a nd i nvited Carl to submit some of his watercolors. It does feel good to receive this exposure, but what feels really good is that my work isnt out of place. This doesnt hurt the reputation of myself or Snow College, said Purcell. The art teacher, now completing his 15th year of n teaching at Snow college, is for his work around the well-know- Western United States and is now expanding his exposure nationwide. Forest Service policy and direction is to bring management of all range allotments into compliance with standards and guidelines of the Forest Land Management Plan. It is proposed to amend and update plans on the Fairview C&H, Manti Canyon C&H, South Ephraim C&H, Thistle Creek S&G, and South Sanpitch S&G Environmental Allotments. Assessments, Decision Notices and Allotment Management Plans were approved February 2, 1988, January 27, 1986, February 22, 1988, June 30, 1986 and range improvements are being considered. These areas are also located west of the Skyline on the Sanpete Ranger District. Primary resource uses in these areas include wildlife (deer, elk and grouse), timber production, livestock grazing and watershed conditions. Decision J. A few local residents may have seen the original work published in SPLASH. The work is titled Desert Harmonies. Its a watercolor of the San Rafael swell east of Salina, Utah. The work has been sold and is now displayed in a gallery in Las ' Vegas. Its hard to brag or talk about myself Purcell said in a soft voice as he tried to describe the feeling of this latest in a long of list professional accomplishments. I think the quality of the book and the collection of works I share the with pages is quite a compliment. This is the first time Purcells work has been published in a hardbound edition of art, another step that will help both the artist and Snow College achieve notoriety. Purcell is recognized and regarded highly by his peers around the country. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the Utah Watercolor Society. He Carl Purcell has been invited twice to exhibit in the National Societys show, which is quite an honor because entries out of some to selected are 70 about only participate. Carl is represented by two galleries in Utah: The Phillips Gallery in Salt Lake City and the Kimball Art Center in Park City. He also displays work in San Antonio, Fresno, Denver and Las Vegas. The artist is married with five children and stays active in community activities. Over the last eight years he has donated art services to produce a brochure for the Mormon Miracle Pageant.
