Panel discussion Oct. 8 will address Environmental ethics and issues Seeking the Common Good: Environmental Ethics, is the topic of a panel discussion funded by the Utah Humanities Council with a special grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. It will take place Tuesday, October 8, 1991 at 7 p.m. at the Snow College Crane Theater. The program is completely free of charge, and open to the public. The aim of the Utah Council in Humanities sponsoring this program is not to arrive at a Yight answer, explains UHC Board Member Diana Major Spencer. Instead, we want the public to realize that the issues we face are far more complex than adversarial debates. Most questions of public policy are one-and-on-ly too complex to resolve themselves into simple yes' and no answers; and for that reason, rather than immediately taking sides, people should learn to examine a range of options and possibilities." The topic is important and Birthdays Rozella Sevy observes 93rd birthday Rozella Sevy observed her 93rd preserving our natural resources. A public discussion arena would in a benefit us all. Dr. Quinn McKay, whose work deals with applying ethics in the questions of modern medicine, will moderate the discussion. He will present to the ten panelists the case of a community in a rural, semi-ari- d desert, and gradually reveal proposals to address economic problems. As the scenario progresses, panelists will be called upon to weight the positives and negatives in a variety of complications. Local panelists include: Douglas Bjerregaard, Mayfield, Gunnison High School biology teacher and farmer; Ed Boyer, Ephraim, Snow College biology th and ecology instructor; Keller Christenson, Gunnison, Sanpete County Commissioner and rancher, Demont Howell, Spring City, Professor Emeritus of English and Philosophy; Michael Kowalski, Milbum, Snow College English instructor; Ted Olson, Ephraim, Snow College math teacher and member of the State Power Board; Koleen Peterson, Milburn, editor of the Pyramid: Richard Stevens, Project Leader, Ephraim Experiment Station; and Gordon Van Epps, Ephraim, retired agronomist from Utah State University. In selecting panelists, Spencer and Peterson considered geographical location within the county, a variety of points of view, some academic and some general public, and people who serve the public in some way, in order to explore relationships between personal views and public responsibility. Even though Snow College is hosting the program, said Spencer, we want to emphasize that this is a public program, not a college program. With panels of this sort," explained the Spencer, Humanities Council hopes to help our citizens become more thoughtful and responsible, by providing examples of reasoned discussion. 15 Up to Wed Discount on Natural Gas Logs & Fireplaces. like to clear the air.
