The publication features the late Perry Plummer in a lengthy story illustrated with numerous photographs of range scientist, Mr. Plummer, in action. The article by Durant McArthur - one of Perrys boys says Mr. Plummer, who spent much of his working life in Ephraim, was a giant among his colleagues in range science. Mr. Plummers contributions to the rehabilitation of western range lands won him numerous awards. The Society for Range Management gave -- him the Outstanding Achievement Award, the Frederic G. Renner Award and named him a Fellow in the Society. The Wildlife Society him its Wildlife gave Conservationist of the Year Award and the Utah Chapter of the Soil Conservation Service game him its state recognition award. Dr. McArthur says that Mr. Plummer was not only a great range scientist but also a great observer and a great teacher. The issue also has an article, with pictures, that discuss the close collaboration between the Forest Service and the states Division of Wildlife Resources in the rehabilitation of Utah wildlands. The pictures show Research Wildlife Biologist Richard Stevens, who is headquartered in Ephraim, in action. He heads the Wildlife Resources team that works in partnership with the Forest Service in improving the ranges. Biologist Kent Jorgensen, the article points out, is also a member of the team. And under the headline Unsung heros, the issue has a picture of Paul Hansen and a short article that says, Paul Hansen provides an example of a person who made an essential but unheralded contribution to Forest Service Research." Mr. Hansen worked at the Great Basin Experiment Station for 47 years - longer than any other person - and then, after retiring from the ForestService, worked seasonally for the Division of Wildlife Resources for five years. -- Utah are benefiting from improved communication between advisers at both institutions. Kevin Simons, transfer liaison at the U,s Center for Academic Advising, recently visited Snow to share information on university requirements and introduce himself to advisers as a resource. His visit was part of an effort to smooth the transitionfor those we share in common," in U. president Arthur K. Smiths description of transfer students. Were seeing a whole new of set students, says Dr. Herta Teitelbaum, director ofacademic advising at Utah. A few years ago, new students were mostly fresh out of high school. Now, over 40 percent of our entering students are transfers. Theyre a different population with different needs." Enrollment figures for autumn 1991 show that about 50 students transferred from Snow to the U of U. Almost half of the Universitys transfer students come from Utahs the hospital one of these days, dont be alarmed if youre asked a question you might not be prepared for: Do you have an advance directive? In case youre one of the estimated 85 percent of Americans who do not, youll be given information abouthowyou can have one, according to George Winn, Administrator of the Sanpete Valley Hospital. Advance directives are documents that indicate your choices for future health care if you become incapacitated and unable to communicate. There are twokinds: living wills, which describe your preferences for treatment, and durable powers of attorney for health care, which designate someone else to make health care decisions for you if you cannot. Their purpose is to give people more control over their medical care, Winn said. For example, advance directives can keep medical technology from being used on dying patients who would not have wanted it but cannot communicate their wishes. A clear statement made in advance can speak for the patient, ensuring to give them execute one have no doubt about how much technology he or she would have wanted. Hospitals are now'required by law to ask patients if they have an advance directive and I IB - 'I- .X . think about such a subject when be may already they apprehensive or, conversely, only entering the hospital for a minor procedure. We think its better to introduce people to advance directives before they go into the hospital - at home, in their communities, or in their doctors offices. We think people need time to think and talk about the kind ofcare they might want or who should decide for them if the time comes when they cannot decide for themselves. Sanpete Valley Hospital we give patients an explanation of state law, a brochure on advance directives, and sample advance directive Winn forms," explained. Most patients, we find, are relieved to know they can make these choices for themselves in advance, rather than leaving the burden to their IUJJP ' Ov an opportunity to if they wish. At . loved ones.
