Pleasant, Utah Hire Snow Coliege students To the Editor: provide more jobs. There are plenty of businesses around, but they usually hire locals or older women. I am writing you this letter behalf ofthe majority of Snow College students, including myself. Our complaint is that there are not enough jobs in Sanpete County. College is an expensive investment. Many people think they can get jobs when they come to Ephraim, but are very disappointed once they arrive. There are three quarters in a school year. A fourth is provided if a student wants to take classes duringthe summer. Some students plan on going for a whole year but cant because of a lack of funds. I think the community, along with the college, should create and on Snow is a good and fun school. Snow College students s account for of three-fourth- Ephraims population nine months out of the year. We are the main sonsumers who spend our money to keep these businesses going. In order to keep Snow Colleges professors and staff employed, students enrolled, and Ephraim populated, something needs to be done. Thank you, Aimee Palmer Snow College student the Editor: It was my first time visiting After living here two beside her eyes. Friendly months, my roommate and I were looking for an apartment to live in for the next quarter. At that time, I didnt have any sense of direction in Ephraim, neither did my roommate. We felt tired and frustrated after three hours of searching. We took a rest in front of the Public Library. Seeing the library we decided to go ask the librarian. At the beginning we were a little afraid that he or she wouldnt be patient to hear English coming from a foreigner. However, to our surprise, the somewhat older and benevolent lady was willing and kind enough to pay attention to my strange English. As soon as she realized our feelings flowed slowly into our minds because she took us around to look for housing. She was lovely and introduced each place in Ephraim for us, including her granddaughters former apartment. As we expected, we visited every apartment on our housing list. Because of their zealous attitude toward foreigners, my heart was filled with appreciation and tears came into my eyes that day. There are not any better words that I can find to say to those ladies, except Thank you so not-fluc- nt warm-hearte- much d !!. Two bills are in the pipeline which could be of some help to Sanpete economy. The first is related to coal production. IIB 96 Steam Coal Tax Credit, provides for coal producers to receive $1.00 per ton tax crediton new coal exports above the 1988 base year. If a company does not have earnings, no tax credit can be taken. This bill will provide an incentive for Utah coal to become companies in the overseas coal competitive markets. I am one of the four sponsors of the bill. IIB 96 has cleared the I louse and has an excellent chance of passing the Senate. The second bill is IIB 65 Equalization ofCapital Outlay. This bill, of which I am a cosponsor, will provide greater educational equity for school children of the State of Utah, but particularly for the children of Sanpete County. It will go a long way toward insuring that Sanpete children have the same opportunity for a quality education as do the children of richer school districts, such as Murray, Park City, and Salt Lake. Actually only one corner of the original structure still stands. It is tucked away within the limits of the city known for its bright lights, fancy neon signs and gambling enterprises, Las Vegas. In December of 1847, leaders of the Mormon Church sent Porter Rockwell and a party of 15 along the old Spanish Trail to California to obtain seeds, livestock and other provisions. The party returned the following spring. That same springof 1848 a party of 25 from the Mormon Battalion followed the trail from Southern California to Salt Lake. Along with their provisions, there were 135 mules and one wagon. The wagon is believed to be the first ever taken over the route. Thirty men were sent in April 1855 as missionaries to The Meadows, or in Spanish, Las Vegas. They were to establish a halfway station for travelers between the Pacific Coastand Utah.. .maintain good rapport with the Indians and attempt to instruct them in the ways of farming. Work started on the fort in June. The settlers built walls made of d adobe bricks. Peepholes for weapons were installed seven feet high in case hostilities developed. 14-fo- ot sun-drie- But hostilities didnt develop for the Mormon builders, and they were recalled to Salt Lake in 1857. In 1861, however, during the Civil War, it was announced that a garrison of volunteers of U.S. troops from San Diego would occupy the old fort to guard the Spanish Trail. In honor of their commanding officer, the fort was renamed Fort Baker. It is questionable, however, if any soldiers ever occupied the fort; army records show none. The announcement may have been made to conceal the real activity ofthe California volunteers. The old fort is now maintained by the City of Las Vegas. Man survives heart attack thanks to good EMS system For Frank Wattleworth, last Nov. 30 turned out to be day full of small miracles in Sanpete County. At first he thought it was due to the extreme cold and high altitude. He went to sit in the cab of his truck to rest, but the pain continued. After a few minutes, he called to his wife and said thathe thoughthe was having a heart attack. Physicians later proved his diagnosis correct. That seemed hardly possible for this man who spent his summers hiking the national parks of the Intermountain West, a man who had always been careful with his diet to avoid fat. This was really quite a shock - Ive never been sick in my life, Wattleworth said. four-whe- el -- Nevertheless, his family took his assessment seriously and his wife and a son quickly put him in one ofthe trucks and sped off down the snowy canyon Frank Wattleworth pains.
