South Summit jumped on the board early in the st quarter with 1 run by their quarterback. a Mantis defense then settled down and the offense came to life. Kenny Cox had his best game of the season and by the end of the 4th quarter he had thrown the ball for more total yards than what Manti had gained in the last 2 12 games combined. Kenny hit junior receiver Joey Callister early in the 2nd quarter for a touchdow n pass and the PAT pass failed, putting the Templars on the board down b only one point, 27-ya- Manti traveled to Fillmore Wed., Oct. 16 to play the Millard Eagles for their last regular season game. The Lady Templars played well but were just no match for the tough play of the Lady Eagles, as they were dow ned by and 1 the scores of 5 to take 6th place seed for the Region 12 tournament which begins this week. Senior Julie Peterson had a great first game with some strong kills which kept the Templars alive in the first of what would be 4-- 15-1- 2, three games. For some reason this first game just wasnt enough to come back in the next two games and even though the Templars had beaten them earlier in the season, this night it was not to be. The JV also lost their match by scores of 13-1- 5, 15-- 3 and 5, but the freshmen were able to pull it all together and defeat their opponents in three games. Manti again forced a punt and with less than 30 seconds remaining. Kennv Cox threw a pass to Kurt Keisel which was deflected into the hands of a South Summit defender who intercepted the ball and ran it back 43 yards for a touchdown, putting them up in an extremely disappoint2 ing loss for Manti. Tricia Call Next time you watch a BYU football game, watch for a character contrast between 96 Chad Lewis, tight end from Orem and another player on the defensive side who doesnt play by the rules. This ruffian is such a 'contrast with Chad Lewis and other teammates because BYU plays a pretty straight game and keep their emotions in check, even with teams that play mean and dirty. While this particular player is sneaking behind the line after a play has finished to take an illegal hit at an opponent (out of the sight of referees), Chad is out getting set up for the next play. Hopefully, Coach Edwards will catch on to his wayward player and snap him in line; at the same time, I doubt he has to worry much about Chad. The man is so congruent with excellence in how he plays, he exudes it even out of the uniform. On the field, he gives everything hes got, running exactly according to the plan. He looks to be average size with his teammates, but he is a giant when it comes to working with the - he team to reach their goal. Hes not a show-boatworks for the glory of the team. This weekend Chad entered an elite club of players who have caught 100 throws in his collegiate career, one of only 26 to have done so. He also initiated a Say Thank You to the Community car wash. He pulls a 3.43 GPA in Communications and also has a family - his wife had their first baby last month. Whatever Chad does after BYU, he will be excellent, for his team and his community. -- er -- Defining moments in sports come for any athlete who aspires to hisher personal best. Gymnastics gold-medali- st Kerri Strugg achieved that defining moment in the recent Summer Olympics, when she chose to go for a perfect vault, knowing full well how badly that landing was going to hurt, yet uncertain to how close she was pushing the permanent damage envelope. A e example is Cody Strickland of the Manti High School football team. Granted, Manti High's team is not doing so great, there are great things happening on the field. Which is why Cody was recognized two weeks ago in the Deseret News as one of four players of the week (across all high school sports) for 15 solo and 7 assisted tackles in one game. He is one of the best defensive players in the state. Jared Buchanan is known for never giving up -- - Manti may be way behind with 30 seconds to go, yet he is sacking the quarterback like they're way ahead. Jeremy Congden also gets attention from for sacking quarterbacks and causing the other guys to fumble the ball. Kenny Cox performs well now and shows tremendous promise for better things to come as quarterback. Other teams are watching closely for next years Manti team! Our Manti girls sports feature heros too. Volleyball ' and tennis teams gamer respect from peer teams and teams from larger schools. Julie Peterson is one tough player, known as one of the best offensive strikers in the region. Lauriza Beal, known for her serves and defense, and Takesha Cox serves and plays the net. Katie Neilson excites coaches and girls volleyball fans with her talent - theyre looking forward to the coming years. These girls and their teammates are not what many would call tall volleyball players, averaging 5 ft. 8 in.; but their commitment to give the game all theyve got makes them stand as tall and taller than their 6 ft. 3 in. opponents! With girls tennis winning their fifth straight division championship now put away, its'easy to see that all seven girls are champions. Ryan Smith, Amy Hintze, Julie Frischknecht individually, and doubles teams Erin Rasmussen-Shelee- n Willmore and Janey Ann Petersen-Am- y Blauer all gave their best in region and state tournaments. They played all out against some of the strongest teams in the state! Yes, all these players have great coaches; but coaching is only part of the equation. It took years of practice, correction, discipline and strength building, working through blisters, injuries, grades, schedules and distractions to crank out consistent personal bests. BYUs renegade may stick in our minds for getting away with a lot of illegal hits for a while; but it will be athletes like Kerri Strugg, Chad Lewis; Cody, Julie, whose commitment to Ryan, Amy and their team-matthe within rules to their best abilities who will be play champions of life! closer-to-hom- sports-reporte- rs -- es PORTABLE STORAGE CONTAINERS MAY BE THE ANSWER!
